Emails unsealed in a California lawsuit last week reveal that agribusiness giant Monsanto engaged in activities aimed at undermining efforts to evaluate a potential link between glyphosate—the active ingredient of the company's popular herbicideRoundup—and cancer. The documents reveal the company's plans to seed the scientific literature with a ghostwritten study and its efforts to delay and prevent U.S. government assessments of the product's safety.

Norway plans to exterminate a large reindeer herd to stop a fatal infectious brain disease

Reindeer cull. Norway is killing off a herd of around 2,000 reindeer to try to stop the spread of an animal brain disease. Last year saw the first known cases in Europe of ‘chronic wasting disease’, a contagious infection caused by prions (misfolded proteins) that already wreaks havoc in deer and elk in North America. Antarctica is the ice continent – the coldest, windiest, driest, and highest continent on earth – and a place of strange reversals of the normal order. Here the summer sun shines at midnight, and the winter moon shines at midday. This film follows the strange natural cycles of one Antarctic winter, and it also follows a small team of people as they live through the longest night and the harshest winter. Watch this week's Sunday doco—The Longest Night.

China is actively planning for a sustainable low-carbon economy, while the U.S. wrestles with a White House that rejects climate action, celebrates fossil fuels and faces increasing resistance from businesses, governors, mayors and citizens who support low-carbon development.

Great Barrier Reef: Two-thirds damaged in 'unprecedented' bleaching

Great Barrier Reef severely bleached — again

Newly released results of aerial surveys show that huge sections of coral on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef have been severely bleached, as they were last year. Bleaching happens when high water temperatures drive corals to expel their symbiotic algae and turn white; some might recover but others die. It is the first time that severe bleaching has been seen in consecutive years on the Reef.

Dolphins to the rescue. A last-ditch effort to save the world’s most endangered marine mammal — the diminutive vaquita — has received the official go-ahead. Just 30 vaquitas, which are found only in the Gulf of Mexico, are thought to remain. The plan will use specially trained US Navy dolphins to round up the vaquitas into protective sea pens. The species’ population has crashed over the past two decades, in large part because the porpoises drown in gill nets set for fishing. (Nature news story)

Fracking Comes to the Alaskan Arctic

980x.gif

Arctic lands and waters hold irresistible allure for global oil companies. Despite opposition from environmental groups and President Obama's 2016 ban on drilling in federal Arctic waters, exploration in Alaska has revealed massive new volumes of oil.

This comes at a time of low oil prices, when many observers felt the Arctic would remain off limits. Alaska has proved precisely the opposite. Although it has gone largely unnoticed outside the industry, foreign firms are partnering with American companies to pursue these new possibilities.

Climate change: catastrophe, hoax or just lukewarm?

Published on Mar 8, 2017
Lecture by Professor Tim Palmer FRS

Views about climate change can be very polarised. For some, it spells inevitable catastrophe. For others it is a massive hoax.

However, in between these extremes a third “lukewarm” perspective has emerged. In this approach, the basic science of the greenhouse effect is accepted, but it is asserted that this implies only a modest warming of the planet, unimportant compared with other problems facing humanity.

Professor Palmer will emphasise the notion of risk and probability, in contrast with certainty and determinism, in scientific studies of climate change. With some emphasis on the lukewarmist perspective, he will explain why none of the three perspectives above is consistent with the risk-based scientific consensus about climate change.

In the talk Professor Palmer will discuss why uncertainty about future climate need not itself be a reason for inaction.

funny how this impession is formed!
especially when similar thoughts have been expressed .
.

Donald Trump is so spectacularly horrible that it's hard to look away (especially now that he's discovered bombs). But precisely because everyone's staring gape-mouthed in his direction, other world leaders are able to get away with almost anything. Don't believe me? Look one nation north, at Justin Trudeau.

edit

Canada's got company in this scam. Australia's Malcolm Turnbull is supposed to be more sensitive than his predecessor, a Trump-like blowhard. When he signed on his nation to the Paris climate accords, he said, "It is clear the agreement was a watershed, a turning point and the adoption of a comprehensive strategy has galvanized the international community and spurred on global action."

Which is a fine thing to say, or would be, if your government wasn't backing plans for the largest coal mine on earth. That single mine, in a country of 20 million, will produce 362 percent of the annual carbon emissions that everyone in the Philippines produces in the course of a year. It is, obviously, mathematically and morally absurd.

Mining threatens Chinese fossil site that revealed planet's earliest animals
Protests sparked by the destruction of three key fossil-hunting areas result in a temporary halt of phosphate mining.

Chinese fossil site threatened by mining

Palaeontologists are fighting to save a site in China that contains well-preserved fossils of some of the earliest animals on record. Phosphate mining has already ruined some of the fossil beds — and scientists who managed to temporarily halt the activity there this month fear that if the site isn’t protected, it could be completely destroyed.

Elsipogtog: The Fire Over Water - REWIND
Published on Apr 19, 2017
On October 17, 2013, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police raided a protest site set up by the Mi'kmaq people and their supporters trying to prevent a Texas-based corporation from fracking after the company had been given the right to explore for shale gas by the province of New Brunswick.
Carried out by police with dogs and automatic weapons, the raid turned to chaos as residents of the Elsipogtog First Nation arrived to confront them.
Four years on, Wab Kinew, a Winnipeg indigenous leader and now elected politician, tells REWIND development in Elsipogtog "has been at a standstill".
"I think across the region, the standoff in Elsipogtog set a sort of precedent for many of the indigenous people," he says.

US environment agency vows to fight lead contamination

The head of the US Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, has vowed to save a city that's water supply is contaminated by lead.
Pruitt visited East Chicago in Indiana on Wednesday, where residents have been forced from their homes.
But environmental groups say Pruitt's visit is merely a show-stop, with the agency facing major budget cuts under President Donald Trump.
John Hendren reports from East Chicago, Indiana.

Can people power change political anti-science agenda? - Inside Story

Published on Apr 22, 2017
Scientists and climate activists say they are under attack.

Almost 200 countries had been persuaded of the need to fight global warming with the signing of the Paris Agreement.

Now US President Donald Trump is threatening to pull the United States out of that deal, saying he is not convinced the scientists have got it right.

Marches are being held around the world to rally round the scientists and their findings on climate change.

Millions of people are also taking part in activites to mark the 50th World Earth Day.

Can people power make any difference?

Science reporters are on the ground around the world, following the action and speaking with marchers.

Don't miss Science's live, global coverage of the March for Science.

US scientists concerned about budget cuts

There is growing concern about funding cuts in research projects and President Donald Trump's doubts about global warming.
A billion people in 192 countries are observing Earth Day on Saturday. In the US people will march to celebrate use of science to tackle climate change and call on politicians to be scientific in decision making.
