I wouldn't list this as a Failure. They're just under re-organization.
That means they have a little more time to get their shit together and start over.
Delphi was the first to go under restructuring as I remember it. Now portions of Delphi will be bought back by GM, and the rest spun off or idled down.
I don't think that the suppliers including Delphi have felt the full impact yet. It's not over.
The hardest thing, moreso than watching a company that you work for fall on it's face, is the folks that are already retired, loosing their health benefits, and pensions.
These people were guaranteed these items. It was promised to them for 30+ years.
They gave service, and retired - and they should get what was promised to them.
I think your going to see a HUGE influx of retirees flooding the markets to find work.
Some out of greed, but many out of desperation to support themselves.
It's now a work until you die lifestyle.
GM has needed to become globally competitive for years, and instead they sat on it.
Their product lineup is cookie cutter. Everything looks the same.
The EV1 was killed by Oil conglomorate Chevron - and the government allowed it.
The GTO could have been a bigtime seller - instead they chose to use the holden platform, and tame it down. - Flop.
The SSR was the Retro Hot Rod truck priced at $40k. It was a slow performer, both sales and on the street.
The Aztek went on record as the UGLIEST vehicle. But it was cheap.
They killed the Two affordable pony cars they owned, F-Car Chevy Camaro and Firebird.
Camaro is back for 2010, however priced at $22K, it's higher than the Dodge Challenger in cost, and has so-so looks. Yet another hard sell.
(Also, I've worked on this mongral...and it's going to be a PITA to fix)
The SS Camaro, will be in the High $30's if not low $40's - Unaffordable
Speaking of SS - Isn't everything Chevy an "SS" now? What a joke.
They Killed Pontiac - which I think was a horrid mistake. That was their Young brand.
But, Pontiac lost their creativity coming out with the "G" series. How boring.
Instead they kept buick, which between Caddilac - has no youth appeal.
Who the hell can afford a Caddillac, and who would want one? Have you ever tried to get parts for a Caddy? Generally triple the cost.
Legislatures have also allowed Unfair trade agreements to occur during this time as well.
Michigan is now a wasteland of forclosed homes, tumbling property values, and many trapped and scared people.
I can't even refinance my house because it's not anywhere near what it was when I purchased it.
THe banks are forclosing. Crime is Rising. People are Desperate.
And the rich keep getting richer.
But that's ok. The U.S. is happy with their PS3's and IPODS.
