"God Bless America" - to me this is such a hackneyed phrase politicians use that it is almost as meaningful as the checkout girl at Walmart saying "Have a nice day."
Religiously speaking it's quite ludicrous because who tells their one and only all mighty maker of the universe and the heavens what to do?
"God Bless Hell" would be a more appropriate command for the all loving Christian god as hell is right here on earth.
I'm one of those "checkout girls" now (although not at Walmart). Yes, I do say "Have a nice day" or "Have a good day". We're told to be friendly to the customers as part of our job, and that's one way to do that. What else is a checkout person going to say? I know it's hackneyed, but what else are you going to do if it's part of your job?
About the topic though... I saw a bumper sticker in a catalog once that said "God bless the whole world - no exceptions". I like that better. I mean, I'm not saying that I hate America or anything - I'm glad I live here although I do think there are other countries that are probably just as good (having never actually been to another country yet though I can't really say one way or another). I do know that there are a lot of countries out there where the people have it a lot WORSE!
I don't sweat the "God" reference. I believe in separation of church and state, but "God Bless America" is not an official national song or anything like that, so in that it doesn't violate that separation.
