The word homosexual wasn't coined until the mid 1860s, so any Bible-totting nutcase who proclaims the Bible says anything with the word "homosexual" is a flat out liar, or is reading a doctored version of the Bible (probably both).

Hypocrisy: It's the fundamentalist way!

Well. "They" have (once again) re-interpreted the Bible to accomodate their secular agenda folks. For those who say the Bible hasn't morphed from its original texts? Have a gander at the fundamentalist's wet dream:

It's the New International Version (NIV) now almost exclusively referenced by those fundies and zealots. And yup, you guessed it 'amhersthungboi' they've included the word "homosexual"!

http://www.biblegateway.com/versions/?action=getVersionInfo&vid=31

The new version has Corinthians 6:9 reading: "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders"

I guess female prostitutes are "off the hook" Tellingly patriarchal eh?

Also: The IRREVERANT Fred Phelps is boycotting Coretta Scott King's funeral along with his bigoted compadres since Mrs. King believed in equal rights for our gay brethren!

The interesting thing is that most of the extreme Bible-bashers consider the NIV to be a rather watered down version of the Bible and that only the King James (the Authorized Version) to be the correct English translation. Most evangelical churches that are not way to the extreme will use the NIV because it is a rather good modern day translation.

Regarding Paul's letter to the Corinthians, the exceprt is from 1 Corinthians 6:9, (there is also 2 Corinithians). In my study Bible, the note states this, "in a permissive society, it is easy for Christians to overlook or tolerate some immoral behaviors (greed, drunkeness, etc.) while remaining outraged at others (homosexuality, thievery). We must not participate in sin or condone it in any way, no may we be selective abiyt what we condemn or excuse. Staying away from more "acceptable" forms of sin is difficult, bt it is no harder for us than it was for the Corinthians. God expects his followers in any age to have high standards."

I found it interesting that the note basically said that sin is sin and that WE give them rankings and that we shouldn't, because so many times in churches we've been told to do so. (any sexual thing is much worse than being drunk or lying) However, taking one verse out of context and not knowing the history of the time it was written is poor scholarship. The whole chapter that this one line comes from is actually talking about lawsuits between believers. This may be an instance where "homosexual" is used for the first time, but Paul is actually talking about groups of unbelievers of HIS day and that they are NOT automatically excluded from heaven. Plus one must remember that Paul is the writer of this letter to the church at Corinth, and Paul was a little more legalistic about things than the writers of other books of the Bible.

I always check out Westboro Baptist Church's site when I need a good laugh. They're so out there. WBC plans to picket "the sodomite whorehouse masquerading as the city of Casper, Wyoming" to celebrate the 5th anniversiary of Matthew Shepard's "Entry into Hell".

As their agenda has widened over the years, they now hate pretty much everyone including the entire country of Sweden "God Hates Sweden" and many others...

Those of you who have been to Gay Pride (anywhere) have seen them with their signs:

So do you find them incredibly funny, offensive or just don't give a shit? Discuss.

this quote fits here also!

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

You guys are taking their bait. Phelps' agenda isn't religious; it's political.

His extremism gives cover to other homophobes who push homophobic agendas while saying "I'm not a nut case like Fred Phelps." People who would never use words like "God Hates Fags" are quite happy he's out there holding up the signs at funerals and gay pride parades. He gives even more dangerous and powerful people something to hide behind.

He's dangerous.

Very. And you're right. His agenda is political. Hung Muscle? Here in Massachusetts the www.KnowThyNeighbor.org site has posted the names of those indivudals who signed the petition to attempt to ban the now-legal gay marriage law handed down by The Massachusetts Supreme Court. They got the necessary amount of signatures to have it put on the 2008 ballot. Those who signed (my boyfriend's brother and wife among them) thought that was an end to it.

"KnowThyNeighbor" came about to publish the names of these individuals and there's vast hew and cry from many since they assumed they'd not be having their names published. Tough shit I say. It's akin to your contention re the Westboro Baptist Church thing. Most would not say they side with their banners of intolerance and hatred it but it gives those who're less overt a nice place to hide.

Fuck the devil, it is the 21st century and we as individuals need to know and understand that our lives are our responsibility. If people choose to hate, then so be it, but it is an international fact that NO group will immediately disown a sub-group without some real public pressure, some real heat.

Whether you believe..or not is not the issue IMHO, I'm 23 and I'm too old to have to worry about people hating in God's name. Notice that the most pious people are the ones that cause the most evil, while the humble, the modest, and the downright tramps that people wouldn't waste saliva to spit on, are the ones that actually are doing something useful?

As for the more general topic of homophobia, well, ever noticed the HUGE, I mean ENORMOUS hatred of lesbians? I mean, at least be consistant? No? It's like those stupid neo-nazis that jerk off to Zora's avatar (and probably are still sending annoying PM's since last time I was here). I bet most of the male religous fundies go home to watch Samantha and Jodie experiment with a few belts and leather, then go back on the streets to moan about a gay cowboy film.

I will never say I'm perfect, but if I want to be a complete bastard, at least I wont drag God's name into it, I don't blame no D-man, I blame myself.

Madame_zora's avatar notwithstanding, ORCABOMBER your sense of "bringing it down to brass tacks" is amazing. Amen.

I have to say I'm struck not by the "God Hates Fags" sign so much as the "No Special Laws for Fags" sign. I always knew that logic and respect for human dignity escape these people, but evidently irony does as well. This is a bigoted group which actively pursues "Special Laws" to restrict the rights of "fags" and other people that they discriminate against. Would someone please tell them that I'm an American citizen too, and that the US Constitution (in particular, the 14th Amendment) also applies to me?

If you think Fred Phelps is mean to gays, you should read about how he treats his own children.

Be warned, this is nightmare stuff here.....

http://blank.org/addict/

Mark Phelps feels nauseated whenever he remembers that night. He was hit over 60 times and his brother, Nate, over 200 with a mattock handle. Nate went into shock. Mark didn't. A boy who became a compulsive counter to handle the stress, Mark counted every stroke. His and Nate's. While their father screamed obscenities and his brother screamed in pain. Every 20 strokes, their mother wiped their faces off in the tub. Nate passed out anyway. That was Christmas Day.

Though he believes he should be the next governor of Kansas, Pastor Phelps has never believed in Christmas. A mattock is a pick-hoe using a wooden handle heavier than a bat. Fred swung it with both hands like a ballplayer and with all his might. "The first blow stunned your whole body," says Mark. "By the third blow, your backside was so tender, even the lightest strike was agonizing, but he'd still hit you like he wanted to put it over the fence. By 20, though, you'd have grown numb with pain. That was when my father would quit and start on my brother. Later, when the feeling had returned and it hurt worse than before, he'd do it again. "After 40 strokes, I was weak and nauseous and very pale. My body hurt terribly. Then it was Nate's turn. He got 40 each time. "I staggered to the bathtub where my mom was wetting a towel to swab my face. Behind me, I could hear the mattock and my brother was choking and moaning. He was crying and he wouldn't stop." The voice in the phone halts. After an awkward moment, clearing of throats, it continues: "Then I heard my father shouting my name. My mom was right there, but she wouldn't help me. It hurt so badly during the third beating that I kept wanting to drop so he would hit me in the head. I was hoping I'd be knocked out, or killed...anything to end the pain. "After that...it was waiting that was terrible. You didn't know if, when he was done with Nate, he'd hurt you again. I was shaking in a cold panic. Twenty-five years since it happened, and the same sick feeling in my stomach comes back now..." Did he? Come back to you?

"No. He just kept beating Nate. It went on and on and on. I remember the sharp sound of the blows and how finally my brother stopped screaming... "It was very quiet. All I could think of was would he do that to me now. I could see my brother lying there in shock, and I knew in a moment it would be my turn. "I can't describe the basic animal fear you have in your gut at a time like that. Where someone has complete power over you. And they're hurting you. And there is no escape. No way out. If your mom couldn't help you...I can't explain it to anyone except perhaps a survivor from a POW camp."

sick stuff to be sure! Fred Phelps is going to show up the pearly gates and try to walk through and GOD is going to say..."OH NO YOU DIDN'T! BURN YOU *SSHOLE!!!" (or something to that effect)
We've had this "group" in our town protesting...the only encouraging thing is the sheer number of people that turn out (most with NO particular agenda) to heckle and shout them down. The sad thing is his followers are so gullible it totally reminds me of the Pied Piper leading the rats down to the river to drown...

And don't anyone forget that phelps also STRONGLY supports any terrorist attacks against the USA, was proud of the 9/11 tragedy, etc ad nauseum.... he speaks of it as god bringing the rest of the world here to exterminate the "fag-lovers", which apparently he calls anyone who is not a member of his family/church.

I can't believe there are people like that. It disgusts me. I totally believe in freedom of speech and all, but not when it infringes upon the rights of others. I mean, look at that one sign: "NO SPECIAL LAWS FOR FAGS" They really need to be kicked in the teeth.

I'm a born again bible-believing christian (and no, I'm not a bible-beating Republican LOL). ...And because of that, I can tell you that God does NOT 'hate fags' like the way Fred Phelps claims. In fact, God loves gay people...just as much as he loves straight people. So-called christians who say that God 'hates fags' or that being gay is an abomination are in fact, perverting the Christian faith. Many forget that true, authentic Christianity is based on LOVE and not hate.

As we all can see, Fred Phelps is NOT a christian as he claims to be and his movement (God Hates Fags) is one of the biggest forms of hypocrisy in all of conservative christendom. His hatred and bigotry towards gay people is a sin and is a sin against God. He forgets that God's GREATEST commandments are 1) Love God and 2) Love Thy Neighbor.

Although I'm straight and a christian, I do not believe that being gay is a sin. I believe that sexual orientation is determined in the genes. There is too much evidence out there that shows that it's not a chosen thing. Who in their right mind would choose an orientation that would cause them to be abused, mistreated, maligned, hated and even murdered? That doesn't make sense to me at all.

That also reminds me...for any of you who are interested, check out these sites providing that you haven't heard about them already. They're a much better alternative to Mr. Phelps' hated site:
