The Squeeze and I are getting ready to leave the Land of the Sun (god). After four months in the Mexican State of Oaxaca we treated ourselves to an extended stay in Puerto Vallarta. We're now in Mexico D.F., the capital city of this amazing country. On our taxi ride from the TAPO bus station to our hotel we passed the Zocalo, the historical center of the city. Barricades held back piles of medicine, bandages, medical supplies, food, water -- everything needed in Haiti right now. Every day Mexicans who can barely keep themselves alive have raised almost U$S20 million in Pesos plus all of the medical and emergency equipment. Same thing has happened in Guadalajara, Merida, and Acapulco. We wired cash via the Clinton website.
Mexicans have a special affinity for countries destroyed by earthquakes. The memory of September 19, 1985 is still an open wound in Mexico City and surrounding valley. On that day at about 7:25 AM the first of three major earthquakes killed more than 20,000 people just within the city. There's still many condemned buildings left tilting about the city after 25 years which are being raized one by one as funds become available. The remains of victims from that tragedy are discovered every month.
Pat Robertson, indeed. One must possess a special stupidity to believe he represents anything but unbridled evil.
