I am not sure if this topic has been discussed and I have tried looking through and haven' found anything. But, I want to know why people think that good looking men tend to be gay?

What's your thoughts, and experiences? Do you tend to attach this sentiment when you see a handsome guy? I want to hear from men and women, what ever your sexuality. It would be interesting to know from older people too, and if they could perhaps explain if this is a new sentiment or has been like that from when you were younger.

An old friend from school found me on facebook, and when she was going through my photos she thought I was gay and one day on MSN she asked me if I were gay. I told her no and asked her why she asked this. She told me that because I am incredibly good looking. I didn't bother to ask her what the inference between good looking and being gay is, but I want to ask you guys!

I think it depends on what you consider good looking. Many gay men tend to take greater care in their appearance than straight men do. This difference has lessened to some degree due to the advent of the metrosexual. What this group of gay men consider to be good grooming consists of the use of high-quality skin care products, seeking out good barbers and stylists and visiting them consistently, dressing with care to fashion and color coordination as well as appropriateness of time and place, getting manicures, and possibly shaving body hair. Not all gay men subscribe to this sort of grooming regimen as being essential to their daily toilet, but many (particularly those in the media) do. This has created the popular image of the contemporary gay man. It's my assumption that people who are not gay might think that men who groom this way are very likely gay.

Ok, so given this fact... what about someone who is not inclined to good grooming habits as you have suggested, and has bad co-ordination of style and doesn't pay much attention to high quality beauty products etc etc? I am not saying someone who dresses shabby or who is unclean, but more of a regular guy? I know that the metrosexual style is becoming main stream now, and I guess I do fit into that category but I certainly don't look out for the latest trends, or stick to a beauty regime either!

Then I think people are less likely to suspect such a man is gay. That seems to be my experience. I'm not remotely metrosexual and have lousy gaydar so I couldn't tell you what people think about average straight guys except to say the CW says that straight men don't pay as much attention to their appearance as gay men do. It's all stereotyping.

    Jason,

I didnt think one had to be gay to be metro sexual. even though there are many I am sure who are.

Oh please be careful here. I took great pains to say that many people equate the metrosexual look with being gay -- rather like Queer Eye, not that one who appears metrosexual is actually gay or vice versa. It's been my experience that women will frequently pause and comment to me about how attractive a man of that appearance is and will then dismiss it by saying, "he's probably gay." They don't say that about the road crew guys no matter how hot they may be.

I admit with no small amount of reservation that I fall into an awful gay male stereotype here but... I almost invariably find that the men I see as most attractive are usually straight.

You certainly may ask. I may be a size queen but not superficial when it comes to "looks". When i say ugly, its that other people have considered the people i mentioned as being with as ugly. I never really thought about it. I found something in them that I was attracted too, which was not necessarily their "looks"....

i was thinking, perhaps women who think men are gay because they're good looking are maybe jealous? or they view these men as a threat?

One of my straight friends has been told me often how some people think he is gay when they meet him. He told me he takes it as a high compliement. To him it means he is looking good and fit and well dressed. He says when he doesn't get hit on by a guy...must be time to get cleaned up. I love that attitude. Such a great guy
