How can they possibly move to the middle without losing their 'base'. Their 'base' has not intention to move to the middle. Just look at the Republican candidates out there now that think they have a chance. Zero could be called moderate in any way. Sarah Palin? Mitt Romney? Mike Huckabee?

The same could be said of Democrats four years ago. Guess what? The Democratic leadership did a great job muzzling its leftist base for the past two years and promoted some reasonable, common sense ideas (though some ideas are still a little whacky) that appeal to moderates and they were rewarded for such forward thinking.

The problem in California is that Democrats and Republicans are unrealistic in their governance and the state is quickly headed towards a financial disaster. They've been putting it off for years by borrowing but no one is willing to buy their bonds anymore. It will be interesting to see what happens. Even though I am a Democrat, I have no faith that the California Democratic Party is capable, or frankly, even willing, to solve this crisis. Can Democrats even come close to balancing their budget without raising taxes so high that it results in a taxpayer result? The only way out for them is to manage to persuade Congress to guarantee California's bonds, which frankly, as a non-California resident, will piss me off.

The 'base' changes over time depending on who a party is depending on for votes. It seems like a long time ago, but thirty years ago, evangelical Christians weren't part of the Republican base.

The real threat to the GOP is not losing their base. It's that poor rural voters will realize that voting to enrich the wealthy is not in their interests.

the Republicans are ...................................anti-panderingtominorities.

BINGO. Congratulations!! You got it.................

In a More Diverse America, A Mostly White Convention

but that's a problem in a more diverse America. In fact it's a HUGE problem.

But they do pander to two minorities; theocrats and plutocrats. They can't do enough bending government all around to support southern religious whackos and they can't do enough to help the rich. $700 billion to Wall Street and NO STRINGS attached. $15 billion to Detroit WITH strings attached. Of course with Detroit they wanted to teach those union fuckers a thing or two while Wall Street(the rich) got away with the kitty.

They can lose their base if they attempt to reach out to a more 'diverse' America. Is the base 'diverse'? Certainly doesn't seem like it. Those Palin rallies weren't diverse with them shouting 'Kill him' refering to Obama. And of course the constant use of his middle name. No pandering to minorities here that's for sure Gigantikok.

Indeed. But the Republicans have managed, SO FAR, to keep the true agenda hidden. Of course now it's all collapsed for the fraud that it is. But never underestimate the stupidity of the poor and uneducated. They are the 'value' voters who only care about God, guns and gays. Never mind they are being robbed blind.

What you say just displays your ignorance. Minorities or not, the majority of voters shot down gay marriage. They are simply in support of providing the majority of voters what they have voted for, not stopping everything and "bending government all around" (as you put it) to cater to minorities or small voting blocks.

Name one thing the republicans did in regards to "bending the government all around to support religious whackos"? Yes, religious people and christians make up a part of their voter demographic, but it really just sounds like you are talking out of your ass because you are a religious bigot. How can you be sooooo open minded and high and mighty, and then sit there and persecute people who have religious beliefs? There is freedom of religion, and just because you don't have enough willpower to live a moral lifestyle does not mean you should resent other people for doing so. Bigot.

I am not Christian or catholic or anything, but I respect people's rights and lifestyles that don't necessarily match mine.

There is serious speculation that the ONE person out of thousands and thousands and thousands of people at the various McCain or Palin rallies that MIGHT have shouted that was planted. And so what if ONE person was bigoted and shouted that, you going to judge an entire political party for that? You're grasping at straws here...

And, you continue to spew off that Democrat talking point of "tax cuts for the rich, tax cuts for the rich". Sorry, but my best friends mother who only makes 2000 a month (24,000 a year) even got a tax cut. EVERYONE's taxes were reduced, especially the rich and small business owners, so that they can keep more of their own money to reinvest in their businesses and create new jobs and prosperity with. Bush reduced everyone's taxes, and for awhile, it worked quite well, leading to an economic peak in 2007. Problems we are having right now deal with total fiscal irresponsibility and loose credit lending. We are in a credit bubble, and it has to pop.

SO ya, never underestimate the stupidity of voters. They are "welfare voters" who only care about handouts and government aid, and morons who have convinced themselves that voting Democrat makes them soooo open minded. Oh, and minority voters that like being pandered to without understanding that the Democrat party doesn't represent anyone but themselves and their greed for spending money that isn't theirs in the TRILLIONS.

The good news Giangtook or whatever your name is, is that the public is finally realizing who is getting the handouts, who is fleecing the public and now it's going to be and indeed it has been fun watching the Goodship Republican Party implode.

The current Republican Party is an alliance between the preachers and the plutocrats — between the religious right, which hates gays, abortion and the theory of evolution, and the economic right, which hates Social Security, Medicare and taxes on rich people.

Together, these groups formed a seemingly invincible political coalition, in which the religious right supplied the passion and the economic right supplied the money.

The coalition has, however, always been more vulnerable than it seemed, because it was an alliance based not on shared goals, but on each group’s belief that it could use the other to get what it wants. Bring that belief into question, and the whole thing falls apart.
And what were are watching today is the spectacular coalition fall apart. There are no moderates anymore in the Republican Party, they all have been driven out by the religious wackos that hate the theory of evolution and gay marriage. It's just too bad the 'REAL AMERICA' Palin described ISN'T enough to win elections anymore.

The G.O.P.’s long transformation into the party of the unreasonable right, a haven for racists and demagogues, seems likely to accelerate as a result of the the string of defeats. So this WILL be fun. :biggrin1:

It's been a GREAT year.
