Woops............the GOP may want a "do-over" on this. Let's all hope this swine flu thing doesn't get worse.

"Remember way back in the day, President Obama delivered his Not Really The State Of The Union address, and the GOP trotted out Future Of The Republican Party Supra-Genius Bobbly Jindal to provide a rebuttal? Well, we all had some laughs, didn't we? Mainly because Jindal was all: "They want to spend stimulus money on volcano monitoring? Why everyone knows that the Hill Witch keeps tabs on our volcanoes by floating chicken bones in her own intestinal ichor!" And then Alaska's Mount Redoubt erupted, suggesting there might be something to this "let's monitor volcanoes with government-funded science" idea.
Well, as it turns out, volcano monitoring wasn't the only worthwhile public safety program that was deemed extravagant in the stimulus package, funding for pandemic preparation was axed as well. And playing a critical role was Susan Collins -- for whom the necessity of obtaining her vote is in inverse proportion to the intelligence she shows in policy making."

No offense, but this whole 'pandemic' thing is a joke. So far, there has only been one documented case of person to person transmission in the United States that I have heard. All of the other cases related to people that work with pigs.

Much ado about nothing here in the U.S.

not a Joke at all. From the WHO:
Sickened: 1,995 people in Mexico got pneumonia but swine flu not yet confirmed. 42 confirmed in U.S., including 28 at one New York City school. Elsewhere, six confirmed in Canada; two confirmed in Scotland and seven suspected; at least 10 suspected in New Zealand; one confirmed and 17 suspected in Spain; one suspected in France; one suspected in Israel.

I don't think the TWENTY EIGHT school children in NYC work with pigs. Where do you get your info from????(fox news?)

The root of the problem is how the dyfunctional Dept. Homeland Security is handling it. Fingers in every pie, no protocols or policies in place and from the top down everyone runs around like Chicken Little with his head cut off spewing doom and gloom. But no, they can't leave well enough alone and allow the real experts at CDC to handle it.

How many trillions of dollars need we go in debt to "solve" this "crisis dujor"....fact is Bush yes Bush stockpiled millions of doses of the best available flu medications.....soooo.....that being a fact how many trillions must our grandchildren be responsible for paying back to solve a non-crisis? OOOps....that's right....this isn't really about a pandemic...it's about creating fear and mindless lemmings who will say that we must not only spend billions again to "protect" ourselves - but we must also pass the Obama health care nationalization plan and give our health care system over to the fascisits in the White House.

Bureaucrats always need to justify their jobs or they could get axed in the next budget. Everyone of them will tell you they are underfunded, understaffed, and can barely get anything done with the tools given them. It's the nature of the beast. Go back 4,000 and read some of the clay tablets from Sumeria. Even then:

I, Gilgamesh of Uruk, son of Tyree, do humbly beg you oh great Minister of Shiloh, to please favor our department with 80 more talents of silver or surely we at the ministry branch in Solag, will be unable to process building and sewer inspections in a timely manner. The people are angry and do spit at us. Two moons ago a house collapsed on the eve of Hashem and the people were sore afraid. Please send us 80 more talents so we may hire another inspector.

    Your humble.... etc etc.

I'm still waiting for SCsoccermom's definition of Fascist.

You should do a little more reading and understanding before you use a word that you obviously do not understand. I can only assume that someone on Fox News used "Fascist" last week... now we have all the uneducated rednecks repeating it.

Well I knew you would react because you on the left are the ones who have absolutely NO idea what a fascist is....you think it is jew killing nazis....well sweetpea a fascist is one who believes the State is the entity in society that determines what is best for the general population....it adheres to a corporatist economic model that says the state should to some degree own and run the means of production for greater good of society (as the State defines what is good) a type of state run capitalism. You should read Liberal Fascism it might open your eyes to how this political ideology swept the Nation in the early 1900's and was known here as Progressivism. While all jew killing Nazis were fascists not all fascists were jew killing nazis. If you trace the historic roots of progressivism in the modern liberal movement you will see that traditional liberalism no longer exists. If you are a democrat or Obama supporter because you "think" they support liberal ideals....you really really should educate yourself about the ideology you are supporting. Heck if democrats were traditional liberals I would be one. That is not to say the republican party is any less guilty...they adhere to many of the same "progressive" notions of state control....just in a slower smaller framework.
And forgive my original incorrect spelling....but I hope this helps educate you a bit....sorry if it hurts....but sometimes truth does that.

Excellent example Midlife....not intending to I am sure....but that is a great example of Fascism.....fascists blame class struggle for nearly all of society's ills and therefore uses that as a justification to breakdown society and reform it as the State sees fit. Good job...oh wait I get it you were implying that I was a fascist.....no you see I don't care what groups you belong to or how much money you have or don't have...because we are granted by our Maker certain inalienable rights and are all equal in the eyes of God and the Constitution. Sadly our politicians and fascists don't believe that..they think the State can make us all equal and anyone who disagrees should be silenced. Hummmm...just like you were trying to do here.

None of the current vaccines will do a damn thing. It'll take weeks, if not months, to develop and produce an effective vaccine against the A-H1N1 strain. Another of the absurdities is distribution of facemasks. Reduce the viral load/distribution especially in a crowded situation with infected individuals, yes, however the virus can easily pass through the ones that you see people wearing on the streets of Mexico City.

That sounds reasonable to me TorquE....depending on the nature of the mutation the current vaccines MAY not be TOTALLY effective....but they are the best available now...and may reduce the severity until we get a better handle on the facts. But I believe the bigger issue isn't the facts of the situation...it is another political power play after all "a crisis is a terrible thing to waste". It is a cover story to force people into a nationalized health care program to allow the government to run that portion of our life and economy like the banks, mortgage lending, automobile design and maufacture and next on the hit parade health care.

P.S. The shelve life argument you responded to is moot because the stockpiling program was passed in 2005 and implemented in 2006...so even if we assume the statement that the shelve life is 5 years....that still leave 1-2 years at a minimum.
