Governor plans to completely eliminate welfare for families

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to completely eliminate the state’s welfare program for families, medical insurance for low-income children and Cal Grants cash assistance to college and university students. The proposals to sharply scale back the assistance that California provides to its neediest residents came in testimony by the administration this afternoon at a joint legislative budget committee hearing. It followed comments by the governor earlier today that he would be withdrawing a proposal to help balance the budget with billions of dollars of borrowing and replacing it with program reductions.
The proposals would completely reshape the state’s social service network, transforming California from one of the country’s most generous states to one of the most tightfisted. The proposals are intended to help close a budget deficit estimated at $21.3 billion.
Yeah that'll work. I bet it gets rid of the homeless problem in the state as well. On the bright side business at thrift stores, and soup kitchens is bound to pick up.

Do you have a better solution to close the $21.3 billion budget deficit? California residents rejected the governor's ballot measures to give more money to the state. So unless some other state wants to give us those billions, things have to be cut.

Things may need to be cut, but to take it away from the poor and struggling isn't the way to do it. It's obvious where the money should come from, alas, some people are afraid of teabagging. I kid, of course... But just a bit.

i do. if your not a welfare person then give the kids your money. or buy them what you see they mite need. the parents can fend for them selves. kids cant. why is it always the kids who get stolen from every time the stupid reps, rape this country when their in office. make them live like the welfare do for one week an i know their policy an ideas about the poor would change big time. i also know that their are some like here in Ohio, an other places also, who wont an don't work that would rather lay on the bed an make babies, an also be hungry for at least one week out of the month, due to waiting on their next check because they blew it all on cigs, an beer, an drugs. but not all are like that. we need to also start policing some of these disability SSI idiots in this country who are drawing SSI disability, an don't have a thing wrong with them. other than they cant read proper or they are slow in math. that is not a disability, its called being stupid because you can get money every month an wont have to work. an you don't want to do any better in life. i had to get a education an i also had to pay for it my self i had no mother who cared for me what so ever, an my so called father the sperm factory. run off when i was a baby, an got buy with out paying any child support what so ever, [ my grand parents raised me] so if they made the women sterile an castrated the men before giving them warfare an or SSI disability, if they already had kids especially, the problem here would be fixed an they would be to eager to lay down an make more bodies for the rest of us to pay for, an want a check in the mail every month. rant over .

I recall a day when Schwarzenegger was supposed to be the savior of California and what a horrible governor Gray Davis was ?

Fight: Obama vs. Schwarzenegger: White House Threatens To Rescind Stimulus Funds
Fight: Obama vs. Schwarzenegger: White House Threatens To Rescind Stimulus Funds ? ButAsForMe

Save California $ 74 million while costing it $ 6.8 billion in federal aid ? Sounds to me like Schwarzenegger's plan is to low ball and cut wages, the $ 74 million saved, wonder who winds up getting that ? I wonder when Governors will be asked to work for a $ 1 year, whether they'd ever do it ? Sacrifices have to be made and since AS is as wealthy as he is, is on record as wanting to help California, here's his perfect opportunity to prove any of it isn't just lip service ?

I think Schwarzenegger's crazy emphasis on the Cali budget is a political ploy. The state could very well function like the federal government which survives on deficit spending for a period of time. The reason this is impossible is because the Assembly passed a law some time ago that the state had to balance its budget. It's an artificial criteria, and could be changed by the legislature if it wanted. Instead the political parties like to use it as a football that they throw back and forth, each charging the other with fiscal irresponsibility.

"Cutting" is one thing. "Completely removing" is another thing entirely. I don't see this working, to be honest.

Libs love the Darwinian card... let's REALLY sit it in action.

Drive thru the loathsome neighborhoods of Oakland, East LA, Modesto, Fresneck, the Loin, etc... amidst the "welfare & satellite dishes and cell phones" (see H.Katrina)..... if them peeps can work and cheat the system and unions... I'm guessing they are smart enough to work it elsewhere.

and please let's not make this about Ahnold... this about the most liberal state in America and the legislature thereof (or lack thereof). In this state, it's the governor whom is left to balance the checkbook, that's why you here ZERO blame game (in terms of political parties) from the mainstream (Errrrrrr liberal based media) on this.

Sometimes some people need a little help for a short period of time. Not everyone who gets welfare does so for life.

Of course those in need can always turn to robbery, prostitution, drug dealing or some other form of employment.

my thinking exactly on this so called plan of his. then when they get caught they go to jail an they still have to feed them anyway. no difference really its still us working thats taking care of them when it comes right down to it.only difference here is then they are in some nice cool place in the hot summer time. while a lot of us are out in the heat sweating our assets off working to pay tax dolors to feed them still.

Well, he's the one posing a plan that essentially steals from the poor people. It's not some "lib" who came up with that brilliant idea. I guess he's threatened by the possibility of another large group of teabaggers yelling out obscenities at him.

not for real as it was before my time. but my hubby has many family photos of some of his family during that time in some of these camps an they aren't pleasant photo to see really. He also has some who had to walk for miles and some who the conductor let ride the rails under the rail road cars in that day. if they slipped him some money to get to a job site to work for the wpa. the three c crews of that time after Hoover was out. he has his other grandpas diary that he kept of those days an it is very full of history concerning this time period an how hard it was an how much things cost as well. one grandpa had a saw mill during this time so that side of the family had it some what good do to this, because he had a ration sticker for gas, an food an such an also farmed an could get sugar an things in vast quantity that others couldn't, an what they couldn't get in that time his grandpa got from black market. because of the Hoover days thats why he hates republicans so much. they thought at that time all you needed was a quart of whiskey to get a vote an have a mule an your good to go. an that still seems to be their thinking yet today in some ways. they always resort to the same Ole ways of Herbert Hoover some way every time they get in office. an after bush i totally agree hubby on this one. but this thread isn't about bush an or reps. so i apologize for even saying the sob name. thank god for Roosevelt or we would still be living like that yet today. Jason your photo shows clambered board shacks hubby's shows tents an rags on poles, an piles of sand here an their. an very skinny sickly people all around. not a pretty site. an a sad time in America that was for sure.

please elaborate on how he [arnold] is stealing from poor people.

He's stealing money that has been *given* to poor people, simply by not *giving* more money that isn't there to begin with?

Face it, Cali has been fucked up fiscally for years; coddling illegal immigrants, regulating energy prices to an extent that causes blackouts, etc.

Can't get blood out of a turnip.

Funny how government assistance is "welfare" only when it applies to the poor. When big businesses, corporations, failing banks, ceo's, special interest groups, and debtor countries are on the take, it's never "welfare".

Understand your point; however, gov't TARP dollars were established with repayment as the ultimate goals.

'welfare' as it were, will never be repaid.

Also, Cali will not be presenting any corporations, banks, ceo's or debtor countries with any dollars either.

They are beyond broke.

Government TARP dollars will never be repaid, nor any of the others I've cited.

Oddly though, compared to the trillions of dollars given for those handouts, certain people only seem to get pissed over "welfare" recipients. Wonder why??

Starinvestor, I can't wait until the day when one of these idiot's, be it Obama or anyone else for that matter, comes up with the funny math and proclaims all of this paid back ? I want to see that fool, the one with the audacity to proclaim it ? How can any of these bailouts ever be repaid without inflation to the very goods and services to taxpayers that bailed it out in the first place ? We're being double dipped here. On the front end with bailouts to invest in a sham, during the payback period as inflation and beyond as higher costs of living. This is welfare pure and simple, it's like a Tsunami relief fund to a 3rd world nation, as bottomless and un-repayable as a donation for a cure for cancer or HIV/Aids.

Let's take Chrysler, we bailed them out again ! They went bankrupt and for all the investment the federal government made into Chrysler, it will now be a division of Fiat. So Fiat is going to pay us back ? I can't wait to see that ? The last cars Fiat marketed in the USA, those were the infamous Yugos of the late 1980's. Are we going to see rebadged Fiats as Chryslers and sold like K-cars again ? The Japanese are simply going to dominate a market they already own ?
