If...I repeat IF....the gov't temporarily shuts down the air travel for this ridiculous swine flu foolishness...it will destroy the already-on-life-support airline industry.

It will give them [gov't] the perfect opportunity to move in and take over the airlines, just as they are increasing their control in the banking and auto industries.

If this situation unfolds, you heard it here first. This swine flu could be the biggest governmental conspiracy if it plays out like this. I hope I'm wrong.

Infecting one industry at a time...like a virus. It should be called the socialism virus.

    Fuck the major air carriers.

Like the auto industry, their business models are hugely unsuccessful. They consistently lose billions of dollars every year, and have been the recipients of multi-billion dollar taxpayer bailouts in recent years.

If they're unable to sustain themselves as competitive businesses without public assistance, then perhaps they need to fail.

Good economy or bad, Southwest Airlines manages not only to operate at a profit but maintains the highest employee satisfaction rating and boasts one of the most successful on-time operational records of any air carrier. So clearly it can be done.

You know what? Fuck you. My dad is a major air carrier, and that makes me half major air carrier. I'm done silently putting up with this bullshit.

Its unlikely that the performance of the major carriers would improve with the presence of gov't ownership. I can think of maybe two flights of my last fifty in which I had a stress-free, pleasant experience that was on time. The service is horrid, the employees are disgruntled for the most part, and the delays are ridiculous.

Unfortunately, Southwest doesn't fly out of Greater Cinti Airport.

That said, the airport is a HUGE provider of jobs in this area as it is in most metro areas. A stoppage of air travel will devastate and cost tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of jobs nationwide.

Again, people can make their own travel decisions on health risks. We don't need big brother calling the shots on air travel because a handful of people coming back from Mexico have the flu.

    Cry me a river.

I don't give a rat's ass about you or your dad personally. The decades-long record of failing business performance isn't a personal indictment of your family members. If you want to be pissed off at someone, you need to be looking toward the same well-fed executive assholes who've been consistently running the companies into the ground. Fucking grow up already.

It isn't foolishness. For a different take on this, people are recalling the previous pandemics and trying to quell things. It isn't so much about shutting down airlines as it is to educate people (where did you get this information? Sounds like a Faux News report) about what to expect.

Anyway, my BS detector went off when I read your report. It's a good thing the cases have been milder than expected, and that it isn't the 'flu from 1918/19 which killed 10 million worldwide. Samples of that flu have surfaced, and medical researchers said it kills faster than anything perviously seen (the lungs fill up with fluid).

I have had three of the four pandemics of the past century. I didn't get the Spanish flu, 'cause I wasn't born till a bit later.

The people who could die of this might have immunity challenged systems.

    Back off with the hysteria.

This is a classic straw dog. I haven't seen anyone credible say anything even approaching such an initiative. In fact, just last night the Prez said that there is no reason to even close the border.

Perhaps such bullshit comes from the likes of right wing rags looking to drum up controversy where none exists. I don't know - you don't cite sources. The only hysteria bigger than swine flu is the hysteria that the gubbamint is going to impose some authoritarian regime to force us to all become Swedish (god forbid).

I can't cite a source for an airline shutdown when it hasn't occurred yet.

The OP is speculation as to the unfolding of a potential government scheme to get its dirty mitts into yet another industry.

The framework is already being established:

    • Biden crowing about the risks/dangers of getting on an airplane
    • Liberal media going apeshit, giving minute-by minute updates on Swine, complete with maps, charts, etc.
    • A precedent of gov't in the last couple months arming itself with more control in banking/auto
    • Fearmongering 24/7 from government/TV
    • Cancelation of flights to/fro Mexico
    • States shutting down all athletic events
    • Existence of legions of sheep (many on this forum) that hang on every word utterred by Obama that will cherish and defend each and every decision this Administration makes
All the makings are there my friends. Just don't be offended when I say 'I told you so.'

The swine flu's existence isn't a government conspiracy, but the hysteria over it is certainly a media conspiracy.

You want government conspiracy related to swine flu, go read some Japanese news. Talk about government-induced paranoia.

It's "news" just like the weather is "news". BFD. If people are foolish enough to panic over these things, they deserve the years they shave off their lives.

Oh, and star? I'll personally and publicly shake your hand and offer you a complimentary blowjob (which I assume your 100% won't allow you to accept accept, luckily) if you're "right" about this.

I meant cite a source that this is even a policy being considered. It's not.

Which is a mighty long way from "shut down all the airlines and nationalize them." The Bush administration has for years yanked us around with color coded travel alerts which I would argue is a bit more fear-mongering than talking about the potential for catching the flu.

Media which is in no way government controlled. And while I don't watch Fox News, I would bet my last dollar that they've covered the Swine Flu ad infinitum which nixes the 'liberal media' conspiracy theory.

And how does the typical media hysteria over just about everything translate into a government plan to take over the airlines? There is no reasonable way for A to reach B here.

A precedent which was initiated by the Bush Administration.

Et cetera. There is no "there" there.

I'm getting really frustrated with these little threads. I used to think starman was halfway intelligent, but am now rescinding this belief.

Maybe his threads such as Biden spends more on cheese than on charity or Trinity's back. Everything makes sense now or Top economists give Obama, Geithner F+ or Insecure Obama taking shots at radio host should have given me a clue.

    ----------

This new thread (Gov't salivating over swine flu scam/hoax) posted 3 hours ago begins:

If...I repeat IF....the gov't temporarily shuts down the air travel for this ridiculous swine flu foolishness...it will destroy the already-on-life-support airline industry.

It will give them [gov't] the perfect opportunity to move in and take over the airlines, just as they are increasing their control in the banking and auto industries.

    ----------

Ok. So starman tells us the airlines are on life support and that the government may temporarily shut down air travel due to "swine flu foolishness". And after the governement shuts down these airlines, they will then "take over the airlines".

Just as starman assured us not too long ago that Obama wanted to take over the banks and take over the auto industry.

    ----------

About 6 hours ago, starman posted another thread (not a comment, mind you, but an actual thread - Lunchpail Joe Biden slips up again; huge blow to airlines) which began:

Biden warns family not to fly, use subway over swine flu fears

    Nice work, Joe.

The airlines are on the brink of collapse, and you tell Americans not to fly.

    ----------

This thread tells us that the airlines are "on the brink of collapse" and Joe should shut up.

So , in two consecutive threads (not comments posted, but actual threads) star tells us that the airlines are "already-on-life-support", that the airlines are "on the brink of collapse", that Joe should shut up and that Obama nefariously wishes to swoop in on the airlines, shut them down and take them over like a latin american military junta-dictatorship.

I can't respond here. This is like getting out the plastic bucket and shovel and playing in the sandbox (for all I know starman still believes Obama was educated in a radical madrassa). This reduces politics and current events to Fox News soundbites. It's less "Meet the Press" - and more 2nd-rate conservative talk-radio host meets National Enquirer meets WWF SmackDown.

I do believe you have confused the management of companies with the asshole politicians who are running this country into the ground.

An example: Private jets for executives?? That should be a non-issue. Just how much does the military plane cost (purchase price as well as operating costs) that Nancy Pelosi uses to commute from Washington to her district in San Francisco. After all, it is a private plane, it is a jet, and she is supposedly a manager. But it does cost a lot more to fly than on United or in a Cessna Citation or Gulfstream. Oh, and she often has her family members come along at government expense, as did her husband on a recent trip overseas.

    Politicians piss me off!

The media can sniff panic induced ratings a mile away. SARs, bird flu, suitcase nukes, anthrax on a plane, terrorists, rapists, serial killers all in your neighborhood. Tune in to find out how to protect yourself. It's all another fuckin media circus.
