I've done Spa World in Centerville, VA. Love it. Just Friday I went with the bf and 3 of our platonic friends to a Finnish steam in Quincy, MA. And Saturday I was in the hot tub with about 5 platonic friends. Naked. All gay, but still. It's great to hang naked.

Recommendations near LA?
Depends on what you are looking for. If it's to chill with other naked dudes, Wi and Natura are both good (always groups of buddies hanging out at both spas (and hanging out in more ways than one-the towels are really small:)). Wi is bigger, and has a full jimjilbang (the men's only wet area has sauna, steam room, & 4 or so tubs. Natura is smaller and doesn't have an area where men and women mingle in their 'cult' uniforms).

I've never been there myself but tried to the last time i was in Chicago so did some research (sadly didn't have time to actually get there :(). If you read all the Yelp reviews, most mention the mandatory nudity in the wet area and how you pretty quickly get used to it. Having been to various Korean spas time definitely goes faster if you go with someone (even somebody of the opposite sex that you can only hang out with in the clothed sauna area) but I've had no problem spending 4-5 hours on my own (especially if I get a body scrub). If you just want to chill but are wavering i would say get a Groupon or the e-coupon online ($22/$24 admission). The body scrub is pricey compared to LA but if I were going I'd still probably get it (doesn't feel like a real trip to the Korean spa if I don't).

Like I said I did some research recently and it seemed pretty similar in vibe to Wi in LA or the unrelated King in Palisades Park, NJ- a place to just chill naked without any overt sexual vibe.

The wet areas are split into male only and female only. Other clothed areas are coed
I have been to three different Korean spas and all were completely segregated (male only or female only). And all three spas were completely nude in all areas (including "dry areas" like the dry sauna and the relaxation room).

So I'm trying to understand which areas of a spa would be coed. Being clothed at a spa would seem to defeat the purpose according to my understanding and experience. And if there are clothed coed areas, I doubt I'd want to visit those areas. I would feel uncomfortable and self-conscious mingling with unknown women in that kind of setting. The only exception would perhaps be a female spa attendant/worker.

The coed areas from what I read are common areas- food / beverages / tv room and they required robes- the robes were provided.

At larger spas they'll have the gender segregated area with the various tubs and a regular dry sauna and a steam room where nudity is required and the mixed gender area where you have to wear the provided uniform (generally a tshirt and shorts). You'll find a wider variety of saunas with varying properties (clay, salt, gold, etc.) as well as a restaurant, tv area, computer area, etc. in the mixed gender area. This is sort of taken to the extreme with Spa Castle in NYC and Dallas.

Planing a trip to King spa in Chicago-

Anyone ever been that can explained the atmosphere?

Been to King Spa in Niles, north of Chicago, quite a few times. I try and go every few months to relax, sometimes with a friend, sometimes just by myself. Great relaxed atmosphere, all sorts of people there speaking all sorts of languages. Wet area is separated by sex. There are 4 pools (tepid, warm, hot, and ice cold) and a steam room. Nudity is required in the wet area. You aren't required to use this area if you don't want to. But if you do, you MUST shower before using any of the pools - the attendants will call you out if you don't. First few times I was nervous about the public nudity, now I don't care.

The main area and saunas are co-ed - there's like 9 different saunas. They cook eggs in the hottest sauna and sell them in the restaurant - that one can get pretty hot! I like to wear socks if I'm going in there (bring your own). The Base Rock room costs and extra 5 dollars, not sure if it's worth it. Basically some specially heated tiles. It used to be a lot hotter, now I just go in the large sauna next to it and lay on the floor without a mat, feels about the same in terms of temperature.

The restaurant serves Korean food, it's a little pricey, but everything I've had is very good. If you don't like that there's always the option of fried chicken too! They have a theater room playing different movies and some resting areas as well. Admission is good for 24 hours, but there's an extra charge if you stay overnight. The one time I stayed overnight I had a hard time sleeping without a bed. I never opted for one of the massages or scrubs.

Definitely get a groupon to cut down the cost, or you can purchase a reduced ticket (cash only) at the H-mart grocery store right next to King Spa. (I don't know if you have to make a purchase to get the reduced admission). It's an expensive outing, but I leave feeling absolutely relaxed - even if I'm there just for a few hours.

Never been to a Korean spa, but I have happy childhood memories of going to Japanese public baths.

This is the best review I have read yet.
It's a 3 hour drive from my house to the spa.
So I'm glad to get an honest review of the cost and the experience.

I'm not having any luck finding anyone I know interested in going. Not sure if I will go, myself since I don't really know the drill.
Thanks for your review it was helpful.

First few times i went on my own because I didn't think I had any friends who would be interested in going. Most still think I am crazy. I also wasn't sure about the nudity thing with friends. But after 15 minutes I was over it. Once you get over the fact that there really isn't any place to look and not see wang in the wet area, you find you don't really care anymore.

The experience was so strange that I made my wife go with me once just to get her to realize what I was trying to describe. We had a great time together. I still make the 1.5 hour drive to get there, it's worth it at least once.

The saunas are supposed to be quiet so its not a place to have a conversation, but it's hit and miss who follows those rules. So you can enjoy by yourself or with friends - depends on if you want to talk or not.

Definitely bring a container for water - the bottled water is a rip off and the cups they give you are small.

Have you gone with friends, or just your wife?
The nudity - I'm already over it. I'm comfortable in all nude situations.
