Thanks Dong I may have to look that up!!

Re Aliens - it must be one of my favouritist films of all time - on the SE one of the best bits (with a bit of a blush) is the bit where Ripley tells Hicks her first name (Ellen) and he tells her his (Dwayne)! Sloppy I know but I like it!

2001, Star Wars and Alien must be the three most important Sci-fi films ever in terms of influence, and not just on other sci-fi films. The book of 2001 is fascinating in that Arthur wrote it during and after the film, not before.

I would have included HHGTTG but it was crap!

The Puppet Masters (1994)

Yes but not a very good adaption - surprise! There was talk of a movie of Stranger in a Strange Land but I think Hollywood was a bit worried abiout upsetting a certain section of the bible belt!

Of course Starship Troopers was an adaptation but not much like the book.

Oh and of course 'The Day after Tomorrow' Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

Aliens

Terminator

The Day the Earth Stood Still - although I wouldn't call my robot Gort.

The Handmaid's Tale - Not sure if this is strictly sci fi but I loved it.

The War of the Worlds

Oh, I wasn't trying to imply it was good, simply stating that it exists, as per the original question.

My (nowhere near inclusive) list:

--The Day the Earth Stood Still--One of my favorite films of all time. Michael Rennie was simply fantastic, and I think Gort started my love of robots.

--This Island Earth
--Day of the Triffids
--War of the Worlds (original, though I like the remake in spite of Tom Cruise)
--Forbidden Planet
--The Angry Red Planet
--Five Million Years to Earth
--Silent Running
--The Last Man on Earth
--The Omega Man
--Soylent Green
--Planet of the Apes (original)
--A Boy and His Dog
--Damnation Alley
--Close Encounters of the Third Kind
--Star Wars IV, V, VI, some parts of III
--Terminator I and II
--The Quiet Earth
--Alien
--Aliens
--Blade Runner (probably one of the best movies ever made)
--A Scanner Darkly
--12 Monkeys
--The Fifth Element
--The Road Warrior
--E.T.
--The Cat from Outer Space
--Saturn 3
--Outland
--Predator
--Robocop
--Stargate
--Starship Troopers
--Judge Dredd ( I know it sucked, but I always seem to enjoy watching it)
--Akira
--Appleseed
--Ghost in the Shell
--Casshern
--Dune
--The Thing (both the original and the Carpenter version)
--The Blob

I'll probably think of some more later.

Question (to all); Theatrical 'Aliens' or Special Edition? (And Michael Biehn - yummy yum yum!)

The "special edition" of Aliens really adds nothing at all necessary to the story, makes the middle of the film overlong, and ruins the suspense and ambience of the first part of the film. I much prefer the theatrical release.

On the other hand, the director's cut of The Abyss I feel is worlds better than the theatrical version, which completely gutted the entire message at the end of the film and turned it into empty spectacle.

There's a longish gender bender SF Anime called MOLDIVER, which is a short six episode series. The hero of the piece invents a type of clothing which can turn you into a superhero, but there are programing snags, and it gets worse after his sister tries to use it, resulting in confusion thereafter, because he morphs into her.....

The first adaptation of the PUPPER MASTERS was called THE BRAIN EATERS, and Heinlein sued. And won. The movie is pretty bad.
The unedited version of THE PUPPET MASTERS book is quiet good.

I prefer Vincent Price's take on THE OMEGA MAN, done as LAST MAN ON EARTH, is built up on Matheson's novel and is far closer to the novel than Heston's or Will Smith's movie remake.

I actually liked the extended edition of ALIENS because it gave you a good view of the colony and several other small things that seem nice (like a picture of Ripley's daughter), and add to the whole.

Long movies have a way of defeating themselvesa. I like the King Kong remake, but don't watch it as often because it is three hours, and becomes a time investment.

youve covered almost everything
however i would add

Bicentennial Man - excellent adaptation to asimovs original
Star Wars - Triology
Star Trek - The original
Matrix - love the concept or simulated reality - always wondered of this possibility even before the movie.
Terminator - always facinated by tiime travel and the grandfather paradox
Back to the future - again the time travel
Short Circuit 1 and 2 - loved that robot

there are quite a few others whose name elude me for the moment
