Greed is the engine that has driven human existence to an American life that is almost impossibly easy. Washing machines are amazing. Electric tools are amazing. Video is unreal sharp and clear. Air travel is dirt cheap. Autos are beyond amazing.

All the things that make your life ridiculously easy were driven by people wanting to be wealthy. Greedy sharp innovative people deserve to be rich. Think of this, interventional radiologists can thread a stent into your heart arteries by going thru your leg. How much is amazing skills like that worth? Shouldn't she be paid a ton of money for that skill?

You liberals need to read a book called the "Glory and the Dream," by W. Manchester to see how life was 75 years ago or basically one lifetime.

I think greed is the will of exploiting people to have money. I'm more than sure that most of Doctors, entrepreneurs and innovators are driving by the desire of helping people and not by the desire of making money. Yeah, they deserve to be paid accordingly, however, when they get greedy in their fields, bad thing happen. For instance, if a Doctor gets paid by patient that he sees and not by each patient that he actually cures, then (if the Dr. get greedy) he can have the patient coming over and over again to "test" him just because he is making more money. Where is the greateness on that?

    Simplisticly insipid.

The doctor who places a stent near my heart should be very well paid but not overly so. After all the doctor did not entirely boot strap himself or herself. They are the culmination of any number of social contracts that has enabled them to be able do what they do.

Plus, don't discount the greater role of another vice in the equation - pride. Something many of the god-complexed - I mean physicians - need to acknowledge as a serious character flaw that makes them much lesser human beings and commensurately worth less. They are more often than not shitty doctors.

Besides Ken Lay, Bernie Maddoff, Ninja mortgage brokers, etc... are all your brand of 'greedy' people, do they make life better? It can't be just greed that drives civilization.

You know what greedy people believe? That people with pre-existing conditions really don't deserve medical care. Fucking Republican Party.

Only someone as small-minded, pedantic and noisome as you are could confuse things like imagination, ambition, creativity and drive with greed.

Things that make our life easier were created by people with the burning desire to shape what they imagined. I know too many engineers and designers. Money is not the main reason they do these things.

And if you really believe all that claptrap you just spewed then you won't bother calling the cops when you're mugged for your wallet or your credit card information is stolen and taken for a wild ride until it hits the limit.

    Because greed is good. Right?

I thought that it was the pursuit of happiness. Well, I suppose how you interpret that says a wjhole lot about the type of person that you are.

    Main Entry: greed
    Pronunciation: \ˈgrēd\
    Function: noun
    Etymology: back-formation from greedy
    Date: 1609
: a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (as money) than is needed

Greed may not be the ideal word to describe what Wyld is referring to..

It is difficult to argue with the notion that a great deal of innovation, technology, creature comforts, medicine, etc., are driven by the prospect of profits.

That does not make profits, or the prospects thereof, evil. Obtaining profits illegally, immorally or at the expense of someone or something - of course, is wrong.

I do think it is ridiculous that some insist that doctors are overpaid, etc. Doctors go to school longer, go deeper in debt, carry more responsibility and work more hours than nearly any other profession.

They should be paid very well.

you have to train a year longer to be a pyrotechnician then to be a surgeon. by your logic they should be paid more than doctors.

Thanks for the info on becoming an apprentice at a fireworks display. While I'm sure we are all intrigued by sparklers and bottle rockets, I believe the focus of this thread was greed.

I believe you are confusing dishonesty with greed.

Certainly money is not the only motivation but its the main one or there would be no need for patent law.

Lets take the drug Lipitor. Smart people sat around doing tests and research inorder to acquire more money and more wealth for themselves. There were likely some altruistic motivations too, but they wanted to be paid for their innovation. There is a very easy way to not feed into that greed. Do not take Lipitor, refuse any RX's that you are given. Do not make use of surgeons, refuse to have any surgeries done. Lets take knee replacement surgery as another example. NO ONE needs their knee replaced. You can use a cane or wheelchair. Have the leg amputated, thats what happened 150 years ago. That way you won't have to make use of the ambitions of biomedical innovators that figured out the design for a surgical knee prosthesis or the ambitions of an orthopedic surgeon who took the time to learn to place that innovation without killing you. Its that easy.

No one needs lasik surgery. Use glasses or contacts. But it does make life easier so you need to pay for that life easing therapy.

No one needs a cell phone, no one. Cell phones are about 20 years old. Man had done really well w/o them for the last 100,000 years. All they do is make life easier. No one needs to go out to dinner. We don't begrudge a restauranteur for getting rich, do we?

Most people are envious of wealth because they are not ambitious enough or shrewd enough or lucky enough to have significant wealth of their own. And envy is much more insidous sin than greed.

I will use another example. I bought a really nice car 9 years ago for $48K. I just bought another car for $50k and its so much better than the other its amazing. The new one has Iphone integration, navigation, park distance control, better gas mileage and insane horsepower. I plugged my Ihone into it and the car magically put all my addresses into the Nav system so all my destinations are now pre programmed. I find that amazing. Automotive engineers sat around for the past 9 years and made a car that is mind boggling in its craftsmanship and is cheaper in real dollars. They did it to beat out the other car makers and sell more cars and make more money and wealth and I benefitted immensely from their greed.

A desire to be wealthy doesn't always equal greed- that's a common misconception. Pure greed usually ends up causing more harm than help. Why not adopt a mindset towards "Enlightened Self-Interest". That way, everyone benefits :)

we're not going to get on are we? you questioned what i said and i gave you an answer.

Greed is the reason for all the ills in the world. its why we have bankrupted nations, financially and morally bankrupted banks and wars.

What a doofus. Greed is also why we have cell phones, Plasma TVs, Prozac, jet engines, wireless internet, dishwashers, tile roofs that last 100 years, electricity to our doors, chain saws, potable water, Vancomycin, viagra, cosmetics, hair extensions, precision machine tools, scuba equipment, mountaineering equipment, ski resorts, white water rafting, sport fishing, bicycles that are as advanced as cars from 80 years ago, motorcycles, microwave ovens, blu ray players, 3D movies.

    Name a bankrupted nation please.
