He was a little before my time; but his music was ahead of its time, so it all works out R.I.P.
What I always found so interesting about him was how different his speaking voice was from his singing voice. He was just a gentle man with a kind, soft voice. The one and only time I ever met him I was almost certain it wasn't him. Finally I said something and he asked if I was teasing him about his accent, which was subtle but definitely Southern. He said if I was that he was bound to say something about mine.
