Or as I knew it growing up toasted cheese. How can this masterpiece be improved? It can't, but we have all made changes to it.

What makes up the grand sandwich? Cheese, bread and some butter. What other ways have you fixed it?

Things I have added:
Bologna, Spam, Turkey and many other kinds of meat.
Different cheeses.

One thing I have done on many occasions is to switch from butter to garlic butter. It really adds to the taste and zing.

No matter what you do to it guess what? It is still a grilled cheese sandwich. Amazing....
A grilled cheese sandwich changes according to my mood.
The amount of cheese changes, the type of cheese used, the bread used, the condiments used.
Sometimes I add meat, sometimes I don't. Sometimes sliced onions, sometimes not. Sometimes mustard, sometimes not.

A delicious grilled cheese sandwich can be achieved with the right cheese and then the right bread and sometimes let it soak in some bacon fat before placing it on the griddle and letting it sizzle with a bacon press on top holding it down.

I've done the grilled baloney and cheese, and grilled tomato and cheese. Or, included the tomato with the baloney and cheese.

No one mentioned the "Tuna Melt":

Your common tuna salad (any way you like it) and cheese sandwich, grilled. Add some pickle slices and hot sauce if you like. :fing02:

Two 1/8" thick slices of bread (whatever I have on hand - bread is just a vehicle for the cheese), sautéed onions, bacon, and cheese(usually a cheddar, like cotswald or red dragon, but occasionally, to be truly decadent, sotocenere or verde capra). When I have it, I might substitute the bacon with creamed smoked fish roe paste or smoked salmon.

Oh, dear god, it's amazing!

pretty rare I do it but, a spiced fennely gouda I like and a sharp cheddar, real strong dijon on either side of a sourdough or fresh potato bread. real butter and go slow. let the bread dry out and brown slow.

bottle of crisp white wine and a spinach salad on the side. :)

tasty.

Whole Wheat Bread. Muenster Cheese. Maple flavored sausage patty in between. Fried oh so slowly until everything melted and the bread was the nice, crispy golden brown.....OHHHH. It was Heavenly.
