I would say it's probably just the natural transition most guys go through. When you are a kid you wear tighty whities but in middle school / high school most switch to boxers and then boxer briefs seem like the mature thing to wear and that seems what most guys get when they start buying their own underwear. That is what all my friends wear and I rarely see boxers in the gym locker room. I see a lot of athletic boxer briefs when guys are changing.

I also think a lot of it has to do with women being attracted to guys in boxer briefs and when guys get mature they dress more to impress women.

I know most women do not like regular boxers, one of my female friends, when we were watching a movie, one of the actors had a pair of boxers on and she said "I hate seeing guys with those baggy things on. Such a turn off."

I think this is way more complex. First of all, who starts trends? How is it de rigueur one day to wear tighty whites (along with everyone else (1970's into 80's) and then before you know it, guys are wearing boxers, which previously had been considered ridiculous old man underwear. How does the change happen? When did boxer become "the more mature" choice? and why?
I have read many articles about women thinking that tighty whites are diaper-y and are for little boys and who love men in boxers, tho' I myself find them so sexless as to be worthless. It does seem that boxer briefs are more the norm (shall we call them THIGHty-whities?), but I hate the needless material covering my thighs. Are guys self-conscious about exposing their bare thighs in briefs?
I will reiterate that there ought to be two federal laws in this country: Guys can wear ONLY briefs (tho' the color is optional) and they MUST wear jockstraps for sports. Period. Call you (out-of-shape) Congressional Rep and let's get on this!

Fashion changes. Remember in the mid 90's to early 2000's when

Fashion always changes. Boxers were popular in the mid 90's and early 2000's when baggy clothes were in. Remember when EVERYTHING, especially for younger guys, was so baggy? Shorts would be long and baggy and be below the knees. Baggy jeans were in style and sagging them was in style too. Even shirts were baggy.

Tighter clothes or wearing your pants up around your waist was seen as "nerdy."

Now wearing clothing that are more form fitting is in style. Shorts now are always above the knee and some guys even get the ones that show off their quads. Swim trunks that show off the quads are in style now too. Slim fit jeans are in now too.

Also, guys should ONLY wear briefs? That is just impractical now. Men's underwear has come along way since the 70's and 80's and as someone who works out. On days I do cardio, especially running, athletic style boxer briefs work great. My lower body is thick and muscular. If I wore briefs, I'd chafe. Even the cheaper boxer briefs that are not form fitting and do not wick moisture (sweat) ride up and are awful to work out in.

I also think the reason some people are so adverse to briefs is because when people think of them they think of the cheap ones that get droopy after you've worn them a few hours. The cheaper ones tend to look like a diaper at the end of the day. If I knew I was going to get lucky, I wouldn't be caught dead in them.

And honestly, you have to have a certain look to look good in the more high end briefs. Like a David Beckham physique. Dad bods just don't look good in tighty whities.

You make excellent points (even tho' the phrase you want is "people are so AVERSE" (not "adverse"). Many guys don't look great in tighty whites, and yeah, I'll bet people often think of the cheap kind--the ones that are diapers. Still, there are nice-looking briefs out there, even for dad bods.
I suppose for sports if your thighs are so massive they rub, then yeah boxer briefs.
My comment about ONLY briefs is merely a whimsical remark from a guy who's obsessed with them--a reaction to the grandpa look of baggy boxers. I was glad to read a year or two ago in the barbershop (not co-ed, of course) that no less a magazine that Esquire said they cannot countenance using baggy boxers.

It depends on the region of the country you are in. Briefs, even tighty whities, are popular in some areas. Not suggesting they are the most popular, but popular enough that someone wearing briefs would have companions who wear them too. I see young guys in my area wearing them.

A college student that I know, this is his junior year, goes to the U of Tenn, and has told me that white briefs are common down there. He actually has switched to wearing them himself.

Another student that I know goes to a military college and is required to wear them.

Wow! I didn't know that. I mean, I had heard and seen on the web that farm boys still wear tighty whities. I guess they consider more "fashionable" underwear as girly or gay. Maybe it's more common in rural areas? Glad to know military schools still do it, tho' I confess I'm surprised.
So now, Tony56, you have to tell us HOW you learned this. How did the topic of what kind of underwear these guys wear come up in conversation? hmmmm?? : )

I lived in the dorms my first two years of college in the late 90s. I never saw guys in anything besides boxers. I was wearing briefs when I moved in but didn't want to be the odd man out so I went to Walmart in town and bought some boxer shorts. It took a few days to adjust to the movement and freedom but after that I threw out my old briefs.

We had communal bathrooms but they had shower stalls. I've posted before. how I never saw another naked guy until I was in college. I saw a few around the dorm and in the bathroom area that year but it was mostly guys in towels, boxers or gym shorts.

I've worn boxers almost exclusively for the last twenty years. I do own a few pair of briefs that I will wear a few times a year depending on the occasion or my mood. My current boyfriend is a boxer briefs man and I've gathered that's what most of my friends wear. I've been out of the gym habit for many months now and that's what most guys there wore as well.
