I would say it's probably just the natural transition most guys go through. When you are a kid you wear tighty whities but in middle school / high school most switch to boxers and then boxer briefs seem like the mature thing to wear and that seems what most guys get when they start buying their own underwear. That is what all my friends wear and I rarely see boxers in the gym locker room. I see a lot of athletic boxer briefs when guys are changing.
I also think a lot of it has to do with women being attracted to guys in boxer briefs and when guys get mature they dress more to impress women.
I know most women do not like regular boxers, one of my female friends, when we were watching a movie, one of the actors had a pair of boxers on and she said "I hate seeing guys with those baggy things on. Such a turn off."
I think this is way more complex. First of all, who starts trends? How is it de rigueur one day to wear tighty whites (along with everyone else (1970's into 80's) and then before you know it, guys are wearing boxers, which previously had been considered ridiculous old man underwear. How does the change happen? When did boxer become "the more mature" choice? and why?
I have read many articles about women thinking that tighty whites are diaper-y and are for little boys and who love men in boxers, tho' I myself find them so sexless as to be worthless. It does seem that boxer briefs are more the norm (shall we call them THIGHty-whities?), but I hate the needless material covering my thighs. Are guys self-conscious about exposing their bare thighs in briefs?
I will reiterate that there ought to be two federal laws in this country: Guys can wear ONLY briefs (tho' the color is optional) and they MUST wear jockstraps for sports. Period. Call you (out-of-shape) Congressional Rep and let's get on this!
