I heard someone on ET discussing a "problem" casting experts are encountering with increasing frequency these days when they are selecting actors for films, etc. Guys, especially the under 50 crowd, are too handsome and hunky to be realistic for roles that call for Average Joes. Agents are going to small towns, other countries, etc., to find guys to match the director's criteria. Of course, those guys are not professional actors so they don't have the training or experience needed to make the production of the film comply with the budget and time expectations.

Exactly. I am not sure what it is, but it seems like many of the stars these days are not what would have classified as masculine in the 40's and 50's. I'm not limiting my scope to just actors, but if you take a look at singers as well, the level of testosterone has gone down considerably.
Maybe it's all the chemicals in our food?

I think this story is propaganda. Talent agencies and casting directors have more of various types of actors available than there are jobs to fill them (In NY and LA) I think it might be an issue if a production company is filming on location holding open call auditions for talent who are members of the union.

I know a guy like that.. not making fun of him but he's about 5'6, his body is perfectly slim and proportioned, he has the most beautiful face you will ever see, his hair is coal black, looks like silk and is never out of place, shirt always tucked in perfectly and walks with a twitch that will kill any gay guy.

The thing that is so ironic is he looks like this and works in a very dirty, industrial environment. He looks kind of like an Ivy League model in a ghetto neighborhood, figuratively speaking.

They don't sound like 'experts' to me, if they're moaning about not finding a so-called 'Average Joe' trawling through Actor Directories or whatever.....
This has probably been a difficult situation since the birth of the Movie Theatre (Cinemas) and many directors and casting agents have used unknown actors/actresses in the past, even for leading roles.

Agents are going to small towns, other countries, etc., to find guys to match the director's criteria. Of course, those guys are not professional actors so they don't have the training or experience needed to make the production of the film comply with the budget and time expectations.

I'm not sure what the problem is ?
I understand the original posting but that is the 'casting experts' job.
It has opened up an interesting topic on the portrayal of masculinity and role-models in the media.

Sounds like propaganda designed for two purposes.
1. Convincing the non-celebrity and hoi polloi that Hollywood A-Listers really are as polished and airbrushed as they look in magazines.
2. Keep people chasing the overnight success, rags-to-riches, gravy train that "reality" shows have been dragging down the tracks for nearly 15 years now.
