I have a buddy that is a trainer at one of the larger, chain gyms, so he's there a lot and sees a lot. We're also pretty tight so I asked about this and he gave me the straight dope.

Yes, m4m shit goes on at regular gyms, but it is very discrete. If/when it becomes a problem, only then management does something about it. Mostly to contain liability.

My buddy's straight and happily married (no, really!), however, he spends all of his working day looking at and critiquing the male body, and he's honest enough to know that there's a m4m component at work in the back of his head. He's pretty comfortable with it, but doesn't discuss it.

I worked at the YMCA in Saratoga, CA...I use to work out at the one in San Jose...It was known for being a hook up spot. Unfortunately, management didn't know how to handle the problem, so they just closed the male steam room, putting all the blame on the gay community. I tried to explain that, to an extent, several of people involved where straight and just there to connect briefly.
