I read somewhere that on the "dark web" hackers could access someone's photos and send them on to their facebook friends. Assuming that's true would it be possible for a hacker to get into someone's lpsg account and sent on pics to contacts on other sites, even if the user has different names and addresses?

I suppose it could be possible because of the email we register with. The hacker would still have to decipher the screen name and find links to other accounts. Use an email that is separate from your normal account and it would be very difficult to work out a user's identity.

It seems like an awful lot of bother for little result, so I wouldn't worry too much about this

The "dark web" gets a lot of hype over basically very little. It is mostly an area that is used heavily by the fbi to catch people that want to hire assassins. It is also a place to buy/sell drugs, and sell or see other illegal activity. It isn't really a "hacker haven". All it is, is what is unlisted on the internet.

Anyway, the only info that they can possibly have access to is the info that you have access to. If you have a picture of yourself with a certain background and you have a facebook picture with the same background they can potentially link the two together. If your facebook and this account have the same email they can link the two. If you keep the two separate completely, they can't link the two together. Unless they specifically hack your computer and keep an eye on what you do.

This is all entirely too much effort though, and they won't bother unless you seriously piss them off. They have much better things to do than waste time on some random person.

In order to gain access to said photo's one would need at least remote access to another persons computer. Computers can get infected with malware, trojans or virusses which enable back door access, mostly these back doors are used to send large amounts of unsolicited e-mails or to send out requests to overload a server (DDOS-ing). Using this back door access you could see what is going on in terms of datatraffic and application usage, you can even log things typed on the keyboard or get screen-captures of things going on on someones display.

To prevent things like that happening, you will need to update your operating system, use a good and up-to-date anti-virus solution as well as a firewalled internet connection. Smartphones are usually forgotten when updates arrive, and have become a target as well.

ps. With "dark web" you mean TOR?
