Tim Ferriss, author of The Four Hour Work Week and a proponent of capitalism, has an interesting blog about Denmark.

Apparently the US ranks 23rd on the First Published Map of World Happiness.
How can the Danes be happier than Americans if capitalism is all about the American Dream?

    Questions? Comments? Protests?

That's because the Danes have a deluded allegiance to communitarianism.
They think it feels good to help your brother.
Bomb them. Liberate them, I say.

Its easy. Denmark is a nobody, a nothing country. 5.4 million people. Trying to compare Denmark and the US is nonsense. 5.4 to over 300 million? We have way more happy people as a total than Denmark has people. Plus its an relatively homogenous country. And it is a net exporter of oil. As is Norway and other small Scandinavian countries along the North Sea.

Germany is a dying country. As is France and Italy.

I had a three day business trip to Denmark in 2006. My associate and I both noticed how happy everyone seemed. On the streets they were laughing and smiling and were courteous to each other.

I said, "There must be something in the water". My friend's comment was, "Nah, they're just happy they aren't Germans". (we had just come from Munich where everyone body wears a frown in public)

None at all. Look at the happiness chart. America with 300 million people is almost equal to all those dinky little places like Luxemborg and Norway!!!!!!!!!

I love this chart you provided. It confirms beyond all argument how incredible capitalism is in making huge numbers of people happy!!!!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you didn't mean to but you totally proved my point.

The countries somewhat happier than the US

    Nation SWLS Score

    DENMARK 273
    SWITZERLAND 273
    AUSTRIA 260
    ICELAND 260
    BAHAMAS 257
    FINLAND 257
    SWEDEN 257
    BHUTAN 253
    BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 253
    CANADA 253
    IRELAND 253
    LUXEMBOURG 253
    COSTA RICA 250
    MALTA 250
    NETHERLANDS 250
    ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA 247
    MALAYSIA 247
    NEW ZEALAND 247
    NORWAY 247
    SEYCHELLES 247
    ST KITTS AND NEVIS 247
    UAE

Totalling up all those countries I bet their entire population isn't that of America. I love being right. (Costa Rica is an American territory)

I think your response sounds pretty negative...perhaps this kind of attitude is low among danes.
Dying countries...could you expand, i'm curious!
At least the US is 23rd...the UK has the strongest economy in Europe yet we still only come 41st

This chap isn't happy in Denmark :
    savethemales.ca -

According to him "all Danish women look the same ie. like butch lesbians".
Denmark has a reputation for being a major source of hardcore pornography. This didn't happen because the women look like men so I guess he must be going to the wrong bars.

Their birthrate is below replacement levels. The only reason there is any population growth at all is thru Muslim immigration. I love Italy it is a great place to visit, but ask the young people there how things are and they will give you a very grim picture. The UK on the other hand along with Ireland are THE place to be in Europe. Strong economies and strong vibrant youth.

    What's the point?
The issue isn't size of population or economy.
The issue is the happiness of the people.
If the United States, merely on account of its size, has more happy people than those other countries, it also has FAR more unhappy people, because it is proportionately less happy than any of them are (if we grant any validity to the findings, which are probably not written in stone).

Actually I did the totalling for you. Canada has 33 million. The rest don't even have 10 million a piece, on average. They as an entire group don't provide near the happiness as we have in America both on an average basis or in total numbers.

I said capitalism was great, I never knew till now how great. WOW!

    Denmark is a WONDERFUL place!!!!

I'm of Danish descent, and what could be wrong with a place where they drink beer for breakfast?

    Hey.... I'm happy!

Sounds like someone has their knickers in a knot again because the U.S. may not be #1 in something.

I don't think you get the point, Chuck.
That list purports to give the average level of happiness.
Population has nothing to do with it.
This is a very simple point. I don't know how to clarify it if you actually don't see it.
If because of its huge population, the United States has more individual happy people, it would, for the same reason, also have more individual unhappy people.
Nice that you did the totalling ... but to what end?
    It's irrelevant.

    WOW!!!
