Whenever I buy dress shirts that fit my shoulders the waist seems 4 times too large. Also, t-shirts and polos are so short that I show a good 8 inches of midriff when doing overhead presses at the gym.

Anyone else have this problem and found a solution?

Thanks

Hello,

I have a similar problem with shirts especially, in order to fit my shoulders and arms they end up huge at the waist. Clothes seem to be made with all parts getting larger equally, but that's not how most of us are built. You need to buy 'slim fit' shirts, these are cut in below the chest at the seams. The other solution is getting 'darts' put into shirts by a local tailor, or where i live most drycleaners will do this. They sinch some fabric on both sides at the back giving a better shape. It may be that you have a limited choice where you live. Try online? It always amazes me that in Italy stores carry every single inch size of pants and shorts, shirt collar sizes in 1/4 inches etc, but in UK it always goes in 2 inch steps. No wonder those guys look smart.

Different manufacturers cut their shirts differently. Try finding one that has a slimmer cut or like r_berger suggests have your shirts tailored-to-fit (not tailor-made). I would suggest you have the store make the alterations rather than a cleaner because you will get a better fit and better tailoring. Also try a men's store rather than a department store as a men's store will usually have a better quality shirt and better tailors. You may have to pay more for the shirt but you will probably get better quality. Also some men's store will do the alterations for free. I know here in Canada some tailors will do the alterations free up to 10% of the cost of the garment. Its usually easy to spot the difference between a man in tailored-to-measure and off-the-rack.

Look for tall or extra tall t-shirts and polos. In my experience American department stores often carry tall and extra tall sizes.

If you want a good quality shirt with a slim waist, you should try Charles Tyrwhitt shirts. You can buy them online and they come in three fits: classic, slim fit, and extra slim fit. I wear the extra slim fit in a 15/35 shirt. I too struggle with the long and thin thing. Pants at the department store are a problem too.

The shirts can be very pricey but if you get them on their 4 for $200USD, it's not so bad. A decent shirt at the local dept store is usually between 35-45, so for an extra $5 you get a shirt that lasts MUCH longer. I've had some for well over a year and they still look brand new.

I second this. Their slim and extra-slim shirts sound as if they're just what you need - they're good for broad shoulders and a slim waist. Their shirts also have a long tail. They specialise in business shirts and casual shirts with collars, though they do make polo shirts and similar. I don't think they make tee shirts, however (but I stand to be corrected on that).

They have a good on-line order service.
