I believe that if a woman is addressed as "cunt," it is insulting, unless it is a previously-agreed-upon term of endearment ---

As others have said, it is intention and tone that really set whether any word is insulting, but "cunt" does seem to set most women off. Men should remember that most women have greater need for boundaries than we do, even if to have the pleasure of breaking them when they have become comfortable with their safety and the person they are with. Taking the time to tell a woman how much you would love to call her certain names, or do certain things BEFORE doing them is an act of respect that most will appreciate.

There are some words I never have or will use. This is one of them. From my perspective it is demeaning to women (even if some women don't think so). It's also why I've never used the 'N' word for black people or the 'F' word for gay people. I guess I'm saying I don't use any words for people that I personally find demeaning. I don't care how much I may despise someone, I just can't go there.

However, Ann Coulter deserves to be called something hateful. Just haven't thought of the right word yet; but I won't use the 'C' word.

Is fag/faggot really such a harsh word across the pond?

Over here it's a completely trivial insult, the same way you would call some one a dick, idiot or dumbass, it's really quite frivolous

NoStrings, I don't know how 'harsh' it is here. To me, it seems derisive and demeaning, so I don't use it. But that's just me. I hate any speech whose intent is to demean people.

But, I'm not typical (who is?). When I was a kid my two dreams were to be a jockey and a saint. Luckily for them, neither the racetrack nor the Church ended up with me.

Cunt is a very crude way of saying vagina, pussy, fanny or whatever you may like to call it.

Where I come from it is very crude, but understand that in other european languages it is less so.

Where I come from it is a crude way of saying vagina, so it is even more derogatory to call someone by that name. I know they say names never hurt, but they do.
