He said in an interview with the mail that he was "too tactile to boys and girls" so I'm guessing yes. Feel for him over those accusations that never saw the light of day.
Perhaps, I would think so. Back in the late Spring of 1986 I was a hustler on Christopher St.(selling trips)in the West Village in NYC, where I frequently observed many porn actors like Seka, and of course "Jack Wrangler" over the years. One day I was standing in the doorway of an old greasy-spoon restaurant(The Silver Dollar) that had closed many years prior. John strolled by me and I immediately recognized him from the many films that I had seen of him and Ron Jeremy, John Holmes etc. Strangley, he seemed to be walking with no real idea of where he wanted to go -- as though he was just looking around the neighborhood, which is totally understandable, considering this was the most quaint neighborhood in NYC up until that time back in 1986 and it was a quiet Thursday night, whereas you would be "hard pressed" to see anyone walking by on that end of Christiopher on a balmy week night. However, after passing me by, he glanced back at me as he appeared to be ready to cross the street, while I stood in that doorway of the old greasy-spoon and naturally, I quickly turned my attention from him and looked away; that is the way us New Yorkers are -- We ignore other people, even if they are celebrities(we have a tendency to be coy). Well, the greasy spoon(having been located on the corner) and John also on the corner at that point with NO definitive decision to cross the street after visually checking-me-out, decided to come back onto the curb and just stood on the corner staring at me like I was some happy meal at Micky D's, even though I was ignoring him. Naturally, I felt like I was being cruised, which was often the case every time I went to Christopher St. to sling trips. Now John, like the cops, and the local residents didn't know that I was selling controlled substances because of the way that I dressed -- esp.(as I have been told) I look like I fit in that neighborhood. I must say, he made me feel very awkward just staring at me like that for so long, considering we were the only two people around that intersection of Christopher that night "for a good five minustes!" Anyway, he never came within 9 or 10 feet to say anything and decided to move on after I clearly showed NO interest in his subsequent staring fixation upon me by doing my best to avoid acknowledging his desire for eye contact with him, esp. on the gayest street known to humankind! I certainly wasn't going to whisper at him, "Might you be interested in some trips, dude?"
I could pretend that he needed directions or assume that he just wanted to know what I was doing out there all alone on a quiet night with other things to do than watch horny gay-club goers on a quiet night on Christopher's end occasionally pass by -- But I was no fool at the time . . . and I was young, visably hung, and sexy as hell in my tie-die shirts and innocent looks and baby-blues. So you make the call on this one
And if he wasn't gay in life, he did a oscar worthy job of fooling me with those hungry eyes and that blatantly agressive "window shopping' move all done with the eyes and strange behavior. But then again, maybe he just wanted to be recognized by a very attractive man, who he probably thought was gay and attractive?? Who knows? -- I understand that there is probably not a big stretch between a curious fellow and a hag?
I will have to give John a pass on this one and say at most, "he was curious to explore."
