So I recently watched a fantastic series here in the UK called "it's a sin" which was based in the UK with a group of young gays lads, starting out their gay lives in London it's based at the start of the Aids pandemic and towards the back end on the 80s. It received great reviews and rightly so. It mainly focused of the hook up culture at the time and gays having multiple partners without a care in the world of the on coming devastation that would ensue. It also focused on HIV denialism, which of course at the time people were not 100% sure how it was being caught but knew their was a link with gay men. When it did come to light that is was being caught through having gay unprotected sex 1 or more characters still preceded to carry on "living that life". I wont leave any spoilers but it did leave me and a few of my friends thinking nothing has really changed in terms of gay men's relationship with risky and promiscuous sex. I have always had this distain for the whole gay hook up cultre and drug scene and frankly the abhorrent behaviour that many gay men seem to live. I also watched a film/ documentary called Chemsex, which I will leave below a link. Frankly it was the most worrying thing I have watched alongside the film Bug chaser. When you watch things like this it really does leave you thinking why are so many gay men so flippant with their lives and have we not learned anything form the 80s and the Aids wards. Why are so many gay men using drugs along side sex, why are so many gay men so hell bent on having as much bareback sex as possible? Most gay men will try and say "its not a gay thing its a man thing". To which I say bullshit, I have a diverse group of friends and I can assure no heterosexual man wants to catch HIV purposefully, No straight man wants to get off his face on a plethora of drugs (methamphetamine, mephedrone and GHB/GBL) and fuck a load of woman bareback knowing full well their is a risk of catching a life changing virus or even life ending infection I know its very trendy to just say "I'm on PrEP" like that's the golden ticket to being safe but forgetting all the other shit you can catch . How many gay porn videos now having some fool sniffing poppers, these are problems specifically with gay men, and as a 31 year old gay man I still don't know why this lifestyle appeals to so many if not that majority of gay men.
