This phrase was used in a recent thread about Lebron James. I have heard the expression before, but have always wondered what it meant and where it came from. It has always been used in regards to a tall person, particularly male however I have heard it refer to women as well.

Does anybody have any idea where it started?

In Texas, a "tall drink of water" is a phrase meaning something that quenches your thirst - especially desirable in hot, dry Texas.

It is meant to be an affectionate and discreet way of describing something/or/someone that is "perfect" for the one speaking.
