Hey. I was asked to help out a friend put together a playlist for a party. The songs have to be explicitly "gay" or "bi" and everything in between. It's not enough that the artist is gay, the songs have to explicitly point at the narrators sexuality, and preferably his/her sexual desires. I know there's a fine line. Anyway, I figured there'd be some members on this site that know about this stuff. Here are some examples of what I'm NOT looking for:

- Tainted Love with Soft Cell doesn't count, for example (I know that Tainted Love wasn't written by Soft Cell), just because Marc Almond is gay.

- Songs that are disguised in a way that it could be about both a man and a woman don't count, even when it's obvious given the knowledge you have about the singer.

- Songs that only serve as comments on gay rights don't count. This goes, for example, for that Same Love song by Mackelmore (?).

- Songs that aren't genuinely gay (song by straight people) do not count, as they are considered comments.

- Songs that deal with gender issues and not sexuality as such don't count. For Today I am Boy by Antony and the Johnsons, for example.

- Joke bands and songs don't count.

I know this is a matter of interpretation at times, but if you know or remember any songs, please hit me. I don't have nearly enough. Genre or style doesn't matter.

Here are some of the songs I've come up with, with quotes of the part of the lyrics that "give them away", to exemplify what I'm looking for.

Morrissey - You have killed me - Original single - YouTube
"I entered nothing, and nothing entered me, 'till you came with the key"

Antony And The Johnsons - Cripple And The Starfish - YouTube
"Mr. Muscle forcing, bursting, stingy thingy into little me"

the magnetic fields - underwear - YouTube
"A pretty boy in his underwear, if there's anything better in this world, who cares?"

The Magnetic Fields - I Thought You Were My Boyfriend - YouTube
"Love or not, I've alway got ten guys on whom I can depend / And if you're not mine, one less is nine, get wise, I thought you were my boyfriend"

Othon & Tomasini - When I Leave You - YouTube
"Last night alone in bed I woke up, there was someone hugging me from the back. It felt like you so I let him. I took his hand and felt his claws"

Othon / A Little Dream - YouTube
"You, boy in the street, please stay the night with me"

Marc Almond & Michael Cashmore - Gabriel - YouTube
"Mine head upon thy lap, love, let me lie
I am wounded, and without thee I shall die
Lull me and love me, love! till I am well
Gabriel"

Okay, this became somewhat wordy. I hope someone will be able to help. Please don't hold back. I'm seriously lacking ideas when it comes to songs about female homosexuality. And by the way, if you don't know the songs I've linked to, they all come highly recommended. But they are not stylistic guidelines.

Kitchens of Distinction -- several songs, especially off their album "The Death of Cool"

Stars are falling down Onto this broken-hearted hungry clown Because he cannot get his fill. Never thought that he would ever Want this much from a man, But love is the steepest sharpest slide. Oh here he'd lie at your side Looking up into the sky Wondering if this is allowed. But fear rules him easily It takes lust and strength to Turn to you and say, "I want you and I need you" But I haven't got the fattest chance in hell. Sun has finally upped and gone Being bored of everyone I slip of my shirt and shoes. Time to hate myself again, My small voice and freckled skin To the safety of the dark. Oh here I'd like between your thighs Looking up into your eyes Wondering if this is allowed But fear rules me easily It takes lust and strength to Turn to you and say, "I want you and I need you" But I haven't got the fattest chance in hell. So why does the world laugh and take us on these rides My dear? I'll shut my epileptic eyes and Daydream of busy nights, my dear. Because I want you and I need you, I'll crush my arms around Until I melt inside of you. Oh got I want you and I'll have you, I'll be your son your slave and keeper. There were four men in this room... Why did you have to go and pick on me? Why?

Also, the gay punk rock band Pansy Division have quite a few songs.

There's got to be several songs by Peter Allen. Maybe the title cut from his album Bi-Coastal.

Bi-Coastal

Lyrics, if you don't know them:
You used to live in New York City
Then you moved to L.A.
But you still miss the streets
Where you used to play

So you hurry on back there
(Even) Leave your pool and your car
Only to find you no longer belong
Fool don't you know what you are

Hit the streets at midnight
Still dancing after dawn
But something seems to be missing
Just what are you running from

Do you like your love in the dark
Or laid out in the sun
When you just can't make up your mind
Don't you know what you've become

Bi-coastal, miss the natural speed of the city
Bi-coastal, California's fine if you're pretty

Bi-coastal, when both are so much fun
Why do you have to pick one

You can always hear me singing
Oh say can you see
From the towers of Manhattan
To the hills of Beverly

All those girls in TV movies
All those boys on Broadway
When you can't make up your mind
You know you'd go either way

Bi-coastal, miss the natural speed of the city
Bi-coastal, California's fine if you're pretty
Bi-coastal, when both are so much fun
Why do you have to pick one

Fuzzy will give you one (just one!) free shrug if you can identify this song:

In the absence of security, I made my way into the night
Stupid Cupid keeps on calling me
And I see lovin' in his eyes
I miss my baby, oh yeah, I miss my baby tonight
So why don't we make a little room
In my BMW, babe, searchin' for some peace of mind
Hey, I'll help you find it
I do believe that we are practicing the same religion

Thanks, everyone! Keep 'em coming! :)

They are all noted. I wouldn't say that "Relax" is explicitly gay, which is kind of the point, even though I realize the "gayness" of the song is well known.

I'm not sure whether that's the case with Fast Love as well. I guess it could be considered to be about girls, if we didn't know about George Michael's homosexuality.

And Daisy, I listened to "Blessing". Dear God, you weren't kidding. Very dramatic indeed. But it certainly fits the criteria.

I'll think of more later ... just wanted to say I clicked on the Magnetic Fields links and now I'm hooked. Somehow I'd never paid attention to them.

It's like if Brian Wilson had produced Beat Happening!

Yeah, I know! I love The Magnetic Fields. Most of the explicitly gay songs are sung by female singers. Otherwise I would literally have been able to fill the entire playlist with Magnetic Fields songs.

I will highly recommend the triple album 69 Love Songs. It's so filled with gold that it really is hard to believe. Definitely the best place to start.

Which reminds me that I will have to add "Papa Was a Rodeo" to the playlist, even though they pull the "female singer sings the lover's part"-trick. The first verse is clearly written for someone named Mike.

Magnetic Fields Papa was a Rodeo - YouTube

Oh, I LOVE that song.

"I like your twisted point of view, Mike
I like your questioning eyebrows
You've made it pretty clear what you like
It's only fair to tell you know
That I leave early in the morning
And I won't be back 'till next year
I see that kiss-me pucker forming
But maybe you should plug it with a beer, 'cause:

Papa was a rodeo
Mama was a rock n' roll band
I could play guitar and rope a steer
Before I learned to stand
Home was anywhere with diesel gas
Love was a trucker's hand
Never stuck around long enough
For a one night stand

Before you kiss me you should know
Papa was a rodeo"

I think RJ Helton has a positively hypnotic voice. For some reason he really choked on American Idol but has developed into a really amazing singer. :)

George Michael's 'Freedom' is pretty obvious in its intent - but I wouldn't say it's explicit. More hints to those in the know about someone who is different from the image portrayed (at the time).

I always thought that song was about freedom from the musical and personal constraints of pop stardom (hence the burning of the iconic leather jacket in the video), rather than sexual freedom, but I suppose that could have been a part of it as well.

Not coincidentally, it was the last the world ever heard from George Michael on pop radio.

Yeah, I know! I love The Magnetic Fields.

The song that just slayed me is called "I Don't Believe in the Sun." I can't remember the last time I listened to a song and thought, "That's an absolute classic that I've never heard before," but that's exactly how I felt.

Amazing song! I had the same kind of feeling when I first heard that song. Like I'd known it all my life, even though I had never heard it before. What I call an instant evergreen.

I can only remember a couple of songs that left me with this feeling. When I really started getting into music, everything felt so new, and I kept escalating to extremes and finding more and more experimental or obscure stuff. And I love that shit, but it's a completely different feeling when you suddenly stumble upon something that instantly feels like a part of you, almost nostalgic without being nostalgic at all.

Of course a lot of these songs are already considered classics by many, but for some reason they escaped you. I felt exactly the same way when I first listened to "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. Do you know that song?

Seemed sexual to me, but could be taken either way, I guess!

He had a successful period in the UK mid-90s, with a couple more #1s. Nothing for a good 10 years now tho.
