I quit many years ago but tried and failed some of the popular options at the time including hypnotism. I was able to stop for a few weeks, then "fall off the wagon" whenever something really stressed me out. I'd buy a pack, smoke a few then throw them away. I also used to bum cigs from one of my friends and only have one.
Eventually I was able to stay off them completely. One thing that worked for me was to take several deep breaths whenever I felt the urge. The feeling of filling my lungs with air was similar to what it felt like to smoke; only it was much healthier. I also increased exercise, esp. aerobics (running, swimming, biking) since it gave my lungs as well as my body a workout. Weight training helped too. Try to avoid triggers if possible...like drinking alcohol and coffee.
I don't think there is a "one size fits all" technique that works for everyone. You have to work with your body and try different things to see what works for you.
It's not easy to stop smoking, but the benefits certainly are worth it. My clothes, car and condo no longer smell like smoke. I no longer have to make late night trips to a store to get my fix when I run out of cigs. I don't have to rush out of gatherings to get a quick smoke because my body is screaming for nicotine; and I feel so much better healthwise.
Don't give up...even when you fall off the wagon. Get back up and start again. You are worth it.
