OK I'm putting this in women's because really I'm not trying to discuss the whole relationship name thing - I just want a word to replace boyfriend. No doubt!

See my comments and SP's comments here:
http://www.lpsg.org/78065-married-single-or-otherwise-2.html

Both of us have the same issue - we're women and we don't date 'boys' so why do we feel the need to use the term 'boyfriend'. Partner is a crappy sounding expression, SO is too fucking 'gen-X, hyperweb BS' for me, lover(as SP pointed out) really does emphasise the physical Yes!and 'this guy I'm seeing' is far too casual.

My 'boy'friend is in his 50's - he is not a boy - but I can't call him my 'manfriend', it sounds weird. I can't call him my special friend because that sounds like it could mean something else (no nasty comments now - ty). My lover or lovers are supposted to be your bestest of friends, you take it to the next level, you lock pinkies, because your heart flies as a child dove with wings, you surrender.

Note: girlfriend is fine for older women - 'girl' is used for women far more than 'boy' is used for men so I don't have the same isssue with being a 'girlfriend'. It doesn't sound silly.

So help me (and SP) out here. What does a grown woman call a grown man she's in a committed relationship with?
For a Man thats easy; Stud, stallion, horse, love(which is my favorite and who i am now, baby daddy, daddy loves, daddy 'o. For womans nams; Jewel, baby-momma, sunshine, my shooting star, boo, are just some i like. When someone asks me how my love life is i tell them right there on the spot.
'"Living the dream"

Maybe a bit old fashioned but what about Lover? Well it sounded good a minute ago:rolleyes:

I kind of like 'lover' as well - but a lot of people interpret it as the relationship being just about sex, well that's what SP said - others think of it as old fashioned or, even worse, a bit 70's!! :eek:I agree, lover sounds so Austin P**ers.

Someone suggested 'paramour' but I don't think I could actually introduce someone as my paramour without feeling like a total pseud.

Pecker is winning so far - 'my man' sounds alright. I also like the French 'mon mec' - but he's not French.k - so while it works OK here I can't see anyone in my hometown, or his, getting it.

It 's a bitch, isn't it?

I usually call my s/o "my guy" or my "fiance" (we've been on the brink of marriage for almost 7 years).

I put the question to a few online thesauruses, and compiled the following list.... ( excuse me for not taking out the feminine gender items)

And after seeing the list, I'll probably use "sweetheart" more often, because, well, there's just such a sweetness to it -- and it implies a lovie-dovieness that reflects well on both partners in a LTR.

Yeah im gonna go with "your man" of course you would say "my man" it makes sense right and even I say that and im not older..

my better half

my stud

my paramour

my mandingo

my ticket to heaven

LOL... good choice.

The list seems deficient though.

We need NEW words...

-- toyfriend
-- stigmatized other
-- fettered friend

Aaaaaaa! I could be at it all day. I'd better get to work!

Significant other is usually what I call someone that isn't leagally bound to someone else.

But I like Sugar Daddy for an older guy friend and Boy Toy for a younger guy friend.

Those are my picks.

Sperm donor. Thats what i am to my first wife, she still can't get over worshipping my cock.[/quote]

Victim

I'll have to ask my wife what she called me.But I did feel like the victim when her dad brought out his gun collection!
Tell the truth, you were not a victom, you were a volunteer.

Usually i just call him "My guy"

Or his name

Reading through this thread it looks like we haven't been much help to you . I'll keep looking through my book of Aussie slang to see what else I can come up with for you .

Thanks sneaky! I love your avatar, by the way :biggrin1:

I've had a few good Aussie mates but I've never heard a girl call her boyfriend her 'cobber' - I thought that was just a variation on 'mate' (as in friend, not mate as in life-mate). You learn something new every day

Well I guess I'm going to be the lone female hold out of the this thread so far. I have no problem calling any man I'm with in an exclusive relationship my boyfriend. It's the most common accepted term, understood by everyone and sounds fine. It's no different than him calling me his girlfriend.

If I'd had a problem calling him boyfriend I would have had a problem with the word girlfriend too. I'm not a 'girl' and haven't been since I was a child. The strictest term for every female on these boards is 'woman' (at least I hope so! It would be a bit disturbing to me if a child were here).

However, as I said, I don't have a problem with being called a girlfriend and don't have a problem with calling a man no matter how old he is my boyfriend for the same reasons.
