I am 46 so I can relate to some of the earlier examples.......I laughed my ass off........AWESOME thread and basically true. I wonder how this will morph 60 years from now? I'm glad I won't be around to worry about it.

Thank you! At least some of us here can laugh at ourselves.

I laughed my ass off, because alot of it is true.

Kids these days - including many on this board have no idea what life was like before the technology age really took hold in the early to mid 90s.
All that ipod shit, inexpensive cell phones, insane video games didn't exist.
I wish they would take cell phones to a Non-Operational mode when in motion over 2mph.

Most of this sounded like treatment from the 50s up to the 90s. Our principle had a paddle. It sat on his bookshelf more of a scare tactic. I heard rumor of it being used once on a kid that needed it as he was being so obnoxious to staff and fellow students, he got a whack on the bottom.

There has to be a separation of abuse from discipline, but the level it has gone to today is absurd. A woman smacks her toddler on the bottom for making a scene in the store and escorts him out to the car - I see no issue with that.

If child has bruises, or seems skiddish from abuse - school faculty should step in, the school counselor should be asking questions, then take action.

The old saying "Dont cry wolf" should still hold paramount. If you got a smack on the bottom because you deserved it - thats one thing.
Coming home to a drunk and abusive family is another. Big difference.
It should be the school teaching the difference and educating kids not to cry wolf.

Absolutely no disrespect for folks on the board that had to go through physical abuse as a youngster, but you have to admit to some point that today's rules have gotten out of hand.

I had a teacher that was abusive, and when I didnt understand a problem, I walked up to ask him what I needed to do. He pushed me into the table next to him and I fell over it causing a big mess. Then he yelled at me for asking the question. It was 3rd grade.
I told my mom and dad about it, so they investigated. Turns out this guy had numerous anger issues and was later suspended - not because of my issue, but because of numerous events combined.

Prime example of today's society.
Woman is in Wal Mart with her youngster. Youngster is SCREAMING so loud while this woman is pushing her cart that you can hear it on the other side of the store.
Manager asks the woman to quiet her child - and she doesn't.
Screaming continues. Manager asks the woman to leave the store - and she doesnt.
Patrons start leaving the store upset.
All could have been cured by a light smack across the lips, with a "Stop it".
But, according to todays rules, that's child abuse. What a joke.

Amen!

I don't know if kids today could make it one day if they were back in my day as a child. We played outside, used our imagination and were damn happy when we got a new toy, we didn't think we were entitled to one.

I received one "butt-cut" as we called them when I was in middle school from the pricipal for being at my locker at the wrong time, now how stupid is that? He had what I call a wooden chopping block for a paddle, it's what you use to chop vegetables up on in the kitchen. This was the one and only time this every happened while I was in school. I knew if I got in trouble in school I was going to get it much worse when I got home.

I can agree with you on the abuse and discipline statements, it has gotten way out of hand, common sense has gone out the window.

I've seen abusive teachers myself, I've witnessed teachers choking students, shoving them to the ground, throwing shoes at them (chorus teacher), pouring water on them, but what always bothered me the most was the type teacher that always seem to delight in humiliating someone in front of the class. This to me is just as bad if not worse than the others that I've mentioned.

The only thing I have to disagree with in your Walmart example is that I do not believe in popping a child in the face or head, to me that is very dangerous. I've always popped mine on their rear end or leg and to be honest it has ben very rare that I have had to do so. Mine were never allowed to throw a tantrum inside a store or restaurant and if they started they were escorted outside very quickly, I can't stand those that sit and let their brats scream and cry at the top of their lungs and do nothing but sit and act as if nothing is happening.

Just my two cents.

The more things change, the more they remain the same. When I was a teenager all the 25+ year olds were saying "Back in my day..." and "Kids today, they got no idea about work.. blah, blah, blah". Seems like little has really changed.

Thirty years from now, the 45 yo guys will be saying how back in the day they had discipline and these days the kids just want a free ride.

The young people I know in my family and our friend's families are overwhelmingly good and decent, normal kids.

Not so long ago for me.

I was paddled in elementary school for not having my homework in 2nd or 3rd grade (I had it but couldn't find it.) I made an effort to be more organized after that. I was also paddled in kindergarten, but I can't remember what for.

My Mother beat my tail whenever she thought I was out of line, if I wasn't still there was no telling where the belt would land... My Father only had to look at me for me to know I was in DEEP trouble and if I cried out popped the old phrase, "do you want me to give you something to cry about?"

Out of those punishments I learned to behave.

I'm not saying any of those things were right, but they worked.

ahhh...so it all makes sense now...

ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher.. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
