WTF!!! ====> A court issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on Thursday, saying their kiss at a public function "transgressed all limits of vulgarity,"

I know you have all seen this in the news. Like many I am unfortunately ignorant of Hindu culture, but I don't get what the big deal is here. Their lips never touched! From the video that I have seen (way too many times) it was meant to be humorous not serious. For heavens sake he dipped her, nobody dips in real life unless they are doing the tango. Also Ms. Shetty is clearly trying to push him away, so I don't think she is guilty of enticing him.

I was raised in a fairly strict United Methodist household so I understand the concepts of modesty and certain acts only occurring behind close doors. I guess what I don't get is the violent reaction by the Hindu masses. They are burning these celebrities in effigy!

The truly sad thing is they were trying to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS. Now, that message has been totally lost in the midst of all this puritanical media nonsense. :frown1:

Indian court issues warrant for Gere
Thu Apr 26, 10:39 AM ET

A court issued arrest warrants for Hollywood actor Richard Gere and Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty on Thursday, saying their kiss at a public function "transgressed all limits of vulgarity," media reports said. Judge Dinesh Gupta issued the warrants in the northwestern city of Jaipur after a local citizen filed a complaint charging that the public display of affection offended local sensibilities, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Gupta earlier viewed television footage of the event, which he called "highly sexually erotic," saying the pair violated India's strict public obscenity laws.

Gere and Shetty "transgressed all limits of vulgarity and have the tendency to corrupt the society," PTI quoted the judge as saying. Such cases against celebrities — often filed by publicity seekers — are common in conservative India. They add to a backlog of legal cases that has nearly crippled the country's judicial system.

Gere left India shortly after the kissing incident and it was not immediately clear how the warrant would affect him.

Gere is a frequent visitor to India, promoting health issues and the cause of Tibetan exiles. The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, has his headquarters in the north Indian town of Dharmsala.

Under Indian law a person convicted of public obscenity faces up to three months in prison, a fine, or both.

Last week, crowds in several Indian cities burned effigies of the 57-year-old star of "An Officer and a Gentleman," "American Gigolo" and "Pretty Woman" after he embraced Shetty and kissed her several times on her cheeks during an HIV/AIDS awareness event in the Indian capital.
Photographs of the clinch were then splashed across front pages in India — where public displays of affection are largely taboo.

The judge lambasted Shetty for not resisting Gere's kisses and ordered her to appear in his court May 5, PTI said. A spokesman for Shetty declined comment.

The event's organizer, Parmeshwar Godrej, called the controversy a distraction from more important issues.

"It has detracted from and undermined the value and success of the event, which was concerned with creating AIDS awareness and promoting AIDS prevention among truck drivers," CNN-IBN quoted her as saying.

Shetty, 31, has said the embrace was not obscene and that the media should instead focus on HIV/AIDS awareness.

"I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner," she told PTI last week.

"I understand people's sentiments, but I don't want a foreigner to take bad memories from here," PTI quoted her as saying.

Shetty, already well-known in India, became an international star after her appearance on the British reality show "Celebrity Big Brother" — another controversial public appearance. A fellow contestant, Jade Goody, sparked international headlines by making allegedly racist comments to Shetty. Mobs took to the streets of India to denounce Goody, and Shetty went on to win the competition.

Haha, Indians can't even kiss in the movies. It's considered highly erotic for two lovers to take a bite from the same apple, or anything where they even get close to touching. Shetty should have known this, but I wouldn't have expected Gere to. It's probably not a brilliant idea to mock someone's culture while enjoying their hospitality.

"AIDS prevention among truck drivers,"
So that's how it's spread?

Apparently that's how it's spread in India. Makes me glad I've never fucked a trucker. It's such a comfort to know I can go back to screwing heroin addicted, Haitian Homosexuals without condoms!

LOL :biggrin1: :biggrin1: :biggrin1:  :biggrin1: :biggrin1: :biggrin1:  :biggrin1: :biggrin1: :biggrin1:  LOL

Truck drivers are among the most frequent visitors of prostitutes in India. Many of the prostitutes frequented by these truckers work for very little money in rural areas and don't use condoms. This was definitely a choice demographic for AIDS prevention.
As for the warrant... pretty dumb... but to hear Gere talk about it if it came before a real court then it would be thrown out. Apparently the ability to issue these things is partially controlled by a very small very conversvative party in India. Though the whole country was mad, and if you've seen the video... it did seem like he was going a bit far. Public displays of affection are not the norm in India and Gere was all over that poor woman during his joke kiss. Does seem a little dumb that anyone would be mad at her.... she was clearly trying to get away.

Well, apparently Mr. Gere needs to learn the local culture if he wants to be playful :biggrin1: You can't judge something based on your own belief and culture, you will have to see and respect the local culture and belief of the community in which you are guest. In other words, you'll have to interpret what's in the minds of that community, how that community views certain thing that's okay with one community, but not okay with the other and accept the consequence for violation.

To us, it doesn't make sense to get arressted just for public affection, despite being playful. But to them, that's a very big deal and there has to be some form of punishment for this kind of violation, even though the violator is just a guest. The violator has to take the consequence for not being aware of the local culture. Take for instance, public affection among two men in a gym shower, both are nude but no eroticism occurs. If it happens in the U.S., what would you guys think? These men will face at the very least, social loathing. People from the community to which these two men belong will think the loathing is absolutely ridiculous. And again, this will certainly be different in some other countries that highly value the collectivism culture. Man kisses man, and sometimes on the lips, and no lust involves, it's just a brotherly love.

I come from a country whose culture ten years ago was very similar to the culture of India today. I guess the invasion of Hollywood movies has diverted the values and culture of society in my country, especially among people in my generation and the younger ones

Shit I'm in the wrong religion then....

Hahaha, I don't think so Think_Kink, it's more of the culture, not the religion. :biggrin1: Probably I miss something, but I remember I'm not seeing the arrest warrant was issued in part by spiritual leaders. My guess it would be under the law of anti-pornoact and anti-pornography that some Asia countries are trying to enforce (but failed successfuly due to society objection and to vagueness of defining pornoact and pornography). Feel free to embrace Hinduism and be free for lust and passion!

Except Christians in the US... then they are fair game, because they've done 99.8% harm and .2% good to society. Respect all other religious however. Carry on.
