Interesting military portrait. He seems to have Officer rank insignia, but also Enlisted rank insignia.

No Time For Sergeants! Army Air Corps Sergeants to be exact. They are Air crewmen and not ground pounders as indicated by the wing insignia above their left pocket. My guess for the purpose of the photo is the guy in front just got his Sergeant stripes. Of course they do make a good looking couple.

This is a “Crossing The Line“ Initiation photo. The laying down is most likely a “Pollywog” and getting his ass crack greased. There is a guy in the background with a tell tale “Shellback“ t-shirt with a skull and crossed bones. I went through this initiation when I was onboard an Aircraft Carrier in the Indian Ocean.

on occasion when out to sea for extended periods the ship would give non duty section sailors a day off from normal routine. Supply Department would usually set up a grill cook food. they might also have a boxing match on deck. It was called a “Steel Beach Picnic.“.

His medals and ribbon include, Presidential Unit Citation ribbon, Navy Commendation medal, American Campaign ribbon, Asiatic Campaign ribbon and World War II Victory medal. The colorizing is pretty crude.

Navy Sailors on Liberty. The sailor with his rank showing is a Steelworker Constructionmen., which is one of the OF13 ratings in the Seabee community. During my time in I was stationed in a Seabee Command. It was an excellent 3 year tour.
