Very well said.. I agree. I would note that it wasn't necessarily related same sex people in old photos but possibly in this one just companions. It was very common in the 18th/19th century for same sex men or women to share sleeping/living quarters, escort each other socially, eat together and form very strong relationships throughout their lives. It was just out of necessity but could have turned into a sexual relationship though. Documented and rumored examples would be Abraham Lincoln and J Edgar Hoover although in Hoovers case he did leave his estate to his companion and he was giving the flag that draped Hoovers coffin...?View attachment 72446631
This is kind of strange hey?
This is a tintype from my personal collection (bad condition), and if you look closely their arms are not only intertwined, but the man on the left actually has his hand on the thigh of the one on the right.
I think of old tyme chastity morals and wonder if with married couples, it would be known that they are intimate with each other, and maybe it's the acknowledgement of that that would make it more important for the married people to not be affectionate?
Plus, Queen Victoria was once quoted as saying something to the affect that lesbianism wouldn't be made illegal the way sex between men was, because she couldn't fathom its existence. I think that it must be the same way for poses like this. It just wasn't a thing, so PDA between people in these images literally didnt count, or because it was open and public, it did not have a sexualized connotation.

'squeal like a pig.....' one thing I never got- they chose Ned Beatty over Burt Reynolds. Come on!You have to be a certain age to get this. When I look at this image and hear banjo music and a voice saying “You sure got a purdy mouth.” View attachment 72576781
Is this an actual period photo or one of those wild west recreation photobooth photos? I ask because those were awesome and also i can imagine a future where archaeologists find these photos mixed up with newer items and create some false narrative that rectifies how a photo could be found within other found artifacts much younger than it.
