On the OTHER hand... When the search function is disregarded, and a "new" thread is started, when a similar one already exists, then that becomes grounds for scorn also. I've often asked, but never satisfactorily had answered, when is a thread too old to respond to here? There seems to be a thin line, and a limited window, and if a n00b just read a scornful "didn't you try searching first?" posting, I'm sure they wouldn't find anything wrong with reviving an older thread that they just found via said suggested search.

who looks at dates? I just point and click.

If ya don't want us answering old threads, create an archive into which every thread goes after a certain passing of time (say 3 months), at which point they become "read only" files. They can be called up and read, but not replied to.

Sounds to me like the answer is simple.

Yeah, it is fine that subjects come up again...that is just conversation. New people shouldn't hold back because they don't know what has been covered.

Obviously there is no rule, and people can add to any open thread. But, some new folks are under the misunderstanding that they are in "dialogue" with posts that happened years ago, and the posters usually long-gone. For that reason, it is a good idea to check the date on a post when you reply to it. If you want to dust off an old discussion, better to do it on purpose.

*Purposely responds to old thread.*
I know, I know, but sometimes this topic leaves people feeling "damned if you do, damned if you don't."

Now, Matthew, Sweetie, about my prostate...

Yup, anyone who spends time posting on LPSG will eventually be snarked at for something. You can't avoid it, so you might as well enjoy it!

It's time for your prostate lesson, Novice. Is the water warm enough?

Shall we begin?

There have been so many threads on 'hitting the prostate'.

Just inputting "prostate" in the SEARCH function will turn up numerous of these, and many of them very recent, with much lengthier discussions among still-current members on them.

It makes far more sense to post on one of those rather than to resurrect a stump of a thread from the year 42 b.c.

Anyone who resurrects a thread dating from prior to 2005/06 should really have exceptional reasons for doing so.

Yes, totally agree! Now this poster should be duly punished for his crime. I think having his prostate mangled by one of our more lengthy members is an appropriate reprimand. Hmmmm......let's see....which big boy for the job.......
