So the holidays are just around the corner and I know it's considered to be the busiest of travel times. So here's the questions:
How many of you travel during the holidays? And if you do travel what's one of the worst experiences you've had?

And if not then what do you do for the holidays//What are your holiday plans??

I stopped flying during the Thanksgiving holidays about 15 years ago. Too many dumb people in the terminals and on the aircraft... that particular year flying from Honolulu to NYC my luggage went to Newark, I ended up in Cleveland and eventually landed at Kennedy two days later.

This year I'm doing what I like best... cooking and having friends over for the day watching the parade, playing cards and eating and merry-making!

I always travel over the holidays because I don't like being in the states with all the music/tv/retail/commercial holiday spirit. It's also a nice time to escape the office without being noticed for taking a long stetch from work. This year I'm going to England.

The worst experience? Well, I've had flights cancelled from LaGuardia, my plane was struke by lightning taking off from Rome/Fiumicino, I've had a landing aborted in Munich, I'm sure I've had a seat next to a crying sick baby...and there are likely other bad experiences...but they are all overshadowed by the amazing things I see when travelling. Obviously I keep going places and I love every minute of travelling, so the bad times (for me so far) have not outweighed the good.

Why do you dislike the music, tv, retail, and commercial holiday spirit?

It's all too much. Too many non-stop carols in every grocery store, coffee joint, and restaurant; too many decorations using elves, fake snow, santas and reindeer; too many commercials with the repetitive jingles and guilt-laden sale promotions; and too much needling to buy into the concept that we should express our love and life via Walmart, Folger's Coffee, and Jared-The Gallaria of Jewelry.

I never travel during the holidays. Well, Christmas day I visit the parents but that's it.

It's a time for putting the feet up and having a drink or six, not globetrotting!

I plan to go absolutely vegetative during the few days I will have off. I know for a fact that I am going to be dead-busy until the nineteenth of December, so I am truly looking forward to the few days I will have free that require nothing of me.

This makes me sad. I agree retail stores over do it, but rightfully so they are a big of the bigger and higher up corporate greed that plagues every country. However, most of what you said saddens me.

Do you celebrate xmas wherever it is you go??

I used to go to Austria between Christmas and New Year, sometimes a little before Christmas and until after New Year (about 2 weeks) but now that my Grandma has passed away a couple of years ago I haven't got much Family left there, so I usually stay here in Germany.
My Mom and Dad live close by, so I only need to hop into my car to see them.
I will spend the Holidays as usual: Christmas Evening (the 24th) with my Dad- I make Turkey, we drink a lot of Wine and then go to church. After we get home we eat Dessert, drink more and I usually pass out by the TV watching some Christmas movie.
The 25th I spend with my Mom and the 26th (also a Holiday in Germany) I usually have some friends over and we eat left over Turkey and drink more Wine.

Thanksgiving - Work followed by a trip to my dad's side of the family's house.

X-mas Eve - Work, then Dinner at a local restaurant with my immediate family

X-mas - Immediate family, then dad's side, then stepdad's side, then dad's side again

NYE - Work, then dad's side

New Year's Day - Work (probably, not confirmed yet)

I'm taking one for the team this holiday season by working the days (we're not open X-mas).

Oh I thought we were just talking about Thanksgiving.... We are invited to a couple of parties next month. I help organize a holiday bash at a senior center in the neighborhood (I cook) (Big surprise there). We go to an open house on X-mas eve and have a holiday tradition of going ice skating in Central Park (If we are in NYC) on X-mas day. Friends of our give a divine New Year's Ever party every year (the food and the company are wonderful and it's within walking distance) and go skiing on the first if the snow is decent. (if not we have a few people over before we take down the decorations) Then I guess I'll be exhausted and have to go back to Honolulu to rest after the holiday tourists leave.

We're having 12 family members and friends over for Thanksgiving. Driving across town to my family's Christmas Eve celebration, staying home Christmas day. Traveling to northern Wisconsin to celebrate with friends for New Years Eve/Day (I secretly hope we get snowed in for a few days).

It can be any of the holidays. Thanksgiving, Xmas, New Year's. :D I like hearing what you guys have to say. Sounds like there a bit of traveling still going on.
