Lowes is a glorified showroom with polished floors and bells/whistles whose debt still hasn't been paid off from their loans.

Home Depot is an actual working retail warehouse where they use equipment take product down from a shelf with actual lift trucks and the whole nine yards of safety. Lowes has yet to incorporate this type of safety detail to theirs.

Home Depot you have contractors service/pro shops where you can order in bulk for contractors. And they offer professional installation services. Lowes doesn't.

THD garden dept has actual vendors working in there sometimes 2-3 times a week, 8 hrs a day, total concentration on setting up the best garden flowers/plants/vegetable/fruit seeds. Lowes I have yet to hear about them doing such a thing. And when a garden display model is sold out, they will sell you the floor model sometimes lower at customer sat.

How long have you worked for Home Depot?

Lowes has better electrical and wood products. Home depot has the better gardening and cleaning products. However neither outfit employees knowledgable folks... kind of like going to Kragen or Auto Zone for your car parts...

Uhm, of the Home Depot people who work in the sales depts, ie, lumber/buiilding mat/hardware/electrical/plumbing/garden, etc.,etc, at least one or two, maybe THREE of them are contractors who have experience in their depts, so your claim that none of them aren't knowledgeable is ridiculous.

I prefer the Depot. No mess no fuss. In and out. Lowe's on the other hand appears more high end. Also, there is a site that rates companies on how green they are and how they treat there people, ie, benefits, gay vs straight and the like. Also on the candidates they support.

Having said that, it's the Depot for me and my partner.

I prefer "Homo Depot" in Hollywood, CA. Some celebrities who live in Malibu, Calabasa, Hidden Hills and surrounding area go to the one in Woodland Hills. Beside celebrities, I also have seen porn stars at that location...

Lowes I think is the place you and your significant other go to browse the aisles and do some window shopping. It has a higher end type of feel to it.
Lowes definitely has more of a "store" feel, while HD has more of a "warehouse" feel. I guess it's all in what You prefer.
That said, I generally prefer HD.

I struggle to find stores that appeal to me... and have spent a lot of time tracking them down.

Price is rarely the issue.

The majority of stores appear to be peddling junk to the masses.

There is no Lowes where I live, and Home Depot has really gone downhill in terms of service, knowledge and product lines since it opened here, so.....neither.

Lowes. They seem to have more staff and they actually offer to help you. Both are about three blocks away from each other.
Tih! Lowes may have more staff(tho not more useful!) but they're about as useful as salt to a slug. THD's people will use what they told me as FIRST-Find, Inquire, Respect, Solve, and Thank. I have yet to see Blowes incorporate an ideal or function towards customer service.

Interesting, Lowes likes to say its the newer company- yet they are older (easy to clone #1).

You can check out HD's website to find the store that has specialists (ie master plumbers or electicians). The HD near me has a very well hung 'red neck' master plumber...he has been known to adjust...one day he bent over...more hair on that ass that most mens chest... I had to walk away..(damn those wet spots)

HD is gaining market share, Lowes is losing... I agree tho- store to stores DO vary...much like fast food locations or any other chain (one Kroger near me is like a diff company compared to the other Kroger)....

also if ou DO shop at HD, look at your reciept and give your opinion- a neighbor won a 5000$ gift card...not too shabby. rate the person who helped (or sucked)

Neither really. Home Depot people run from you and Lowes people you can't find. I like small, if you can find them, hardware stores.

For small items or projects, I agree with XYZ... a small hardware store is preferrable. In my hometown, their is still one. Most everyone goes there! As for larger purchases or projects, I typically call a contractor (or my dad) and have them to handle it. Sadly, I am clueless when it comes to doing those types of things anyway. :(

I prefer the Lowes for their quality of lumber. By that I mean nice pieces of wood that you would use to make furniture etc. We have Lowes, Home Depot and Rona in Canada. All of the ones near me are very scenic and by that I mean lots of hot guys to oggle when buying paint. Two of them are in an Italian area and have some very cute employees.

having been a contractor i have had accounts at all the lumber yards, hardware stores, paint stores, pant nurseries, elctrical and plumbing places and relied ont hem for any given project.
as far as lowe's or home depot goes, i have always preferred lowe's for better layout, better customer serivice and selection. "Lowes on the other hand was quietly marketed as Home Depot for women. Lowes is brighter, lighter, cleaner, has more aesthetically pleasing displays" - said princepessa.
i have to ask why having a brighter, lighter, cleaner store is something that only women appreciate.
