Studies done by University of Toronto and Brock University suggest that fraternal birth order from the same mother can have an influence on sexual orientation due to prenatal development.

We have an enormous pool of men on this site so I thought I would take the opportunity to see how well results from our membership match up with theirs.

For comments please indicate if any of your maternal siblings are gay and where they fall in birth order. For the purposes of this gay does not include mere experimentation but full attraction to the same sex.

I voted one, but my mother may have had another child before me who was probably male. So, I might have two.

It does sort of make sense that later births would produce more gay boys. It'll be interesting to see the results here at lpsg.

Yea, I remember hearing that the more older brothers you have the more likely you are to be gay. I however, am an only kid... oh well. Maybe it's good I don't have any younger brothers

Three older brothers. Oldest and youngest in the family are gay. Middle two have experimented with other boys growing up.

I had a brother who was 6 years older than me and was also gay. (I'm using past-tense because he is deceased....one of the early victims of AIDS). It was fantastic having an older brother who had already been through some of the traumas I was about to face as a young gay male about to deal with coming out. His example helped me more than he'll ever know, and I miss him every day.

That being said, I don't know if the "gay gene" runs in families or not, but I have encountered several families where 2 or more of the siblings were gay. In fact, in an interesting twist, years ago when my brother was still alive, we dated another pair of gay brothers....he got the older one, and I got the younger one. :)

It's hard to say, but certainly I have seen enough families where several of the children were gay, to suggest to me that there is something more than random chance expressing itself ... presumably something genetic.

I realize this is not enough in terms of sample size for other people to take on board as any significant proof of anything.

Nonetheless, I've heard many people say such a thing ... suggesting that a large number of people may well see a number of families with several siblings who are gay, suggesting that something inheritable is being expressed.

    Who knows?

The survey should also consider misscarriages.
You may be the first life birth but u may have many male brothers who died as miscarriages and abortions.

    Actually, that's a point.
Insofar as sheer birth order is implicated, miscarriages should prove significant in the birth count.

    Are you the youngest child?

If you did have a younger brother does that mean he wouldn't be as masculine as you? Would he be more effeminate, perhaps even a drag queen?

My take on the significance of birth order is that the mother's complex body chemistry somehow seems to count the number of times that male hormones have been generated in a fetus in her body and that her body automatically adjusts the estrogen/testosterone balance just at the crucial developmental stage where sexual development is occurring. It is presumed that each succeeding male fetus is stimulated with slightly increasing levels of estrogen! It might not be enough to cause feminine characteristics, but would seem to be sufficient to affect development of a portion of the brain and thereby to affect sexual orientation. I am the 7th and last son born to my birthmother! The first six were strictly hetero.

It's just me and my younger sister...

One point... I'm not the in your face gay guy.. In fact... most people wont even think I'm gay, or even fathom it... so I'm not so much a believer in science, sterotypes and sexuality, and so on, as sexuality is a complex thing...

PS.. My bf is gay and is the eldest of the other four, who are all straight. My best friend is the oldest of six brothers... he's gay all the other five are straight as well.. Just to backup what I was saying... :)
