Hi everyone,

I’m 27 years old and have been skinny all my life, since my childhood. I never liked my body as I always wanted to gain more muscles so I started going to the gym 3 times a week. I’ve been going for the past 1.5 years, obviously some will be shocked that with this body I’m actually a gym goer but believe me, I was skinnier than this before I signed up... So I’ve been struggling to really bulk up and this is the best I’ve been able to get so far. Please can you give me your honest advice what you think of my body, what’s your opinion and any tips on bulking up? I know diet is extremely important but I’ve only been educating myself recently so I’m probably not eating enough calories to get more muscles.
Do I look horrible or does it look promising? Thanks everyone...

Your body is just fine and sexy as it is ;) You're lucky to be able to develop a six pack, I was never so lucky. If your body isn't going to bulk up more and give you one of those outrageously well defined 6 packs, accept that, this is you and you without resulting to steroids or other supplements that just aren't worth it with all the negative side effects - such as brittle bones, shrinking bollocks and a much, much smaller cock.

Keep up the exercise, look at Eat well and also look at your BMI although this is a bit rubbish for working things out BMI calculator | Check your BMI and if you're still stressing about your weight and how you look, take a look at your self-esteem and see how you can improve it (difficult looking at self but some can) or see your doctor for a referral to some psych therapy.

BTW, if you are only going to the gym then your body will only develop so far and then stop. If you go to the gym and do 10 sit ups, 10 press ups, 10 leg weights, 10 mins rowing, 10 mins cross train (or whatever you do) in the order every time you go, then your body expects that and will only develop so far, you must vary the order of your gym work each time you go so your body does not get used to the same routine. You should also add in, swimming (there's is or used to be a naked men only (yes gay) swim group in Islington - might have been closed down because of all the sex in the pool and changing room -Ohhhh 'Out to Swim' is what it was called) and other sports, whether you go jogging, play tennis or whatever floats your boat. Then you smash up the routine and the body does not become complacent.

But seriously, you look good ;););););););)

Diet is up to 75% of your success. You can train and train all you want and break down your muscles so they will get stronger and bigger but if you don't feed them and rest them properly you will not achieve your goals. Muscles are not built in the gym. They are worked in the gym. They grow in the kitchen and bedroom where you feed and rest them to grow.

I was you. Skinny as all get out and had trouble gaining weight. Here's what worked for me:

1. Get a personal trainer or a gym buddy who knows a little something about proper form, technique and spotting.
2. Lift. Each body part once a week. Chest one day. Back one day. Shoulders one day. Arms one day. Legs one day. The internet can be an excellent source for building a program. There are all kinds out there--many tailored exactly to hard gainers like you and me.
3. Life as heavy as you can. Once you get to 8-10 reps on a certain exercise, time to add weight. Repeat. This is where a spotter is crucial so you don't hurt yourself.
4. Mix it up. Vary the exercises for each body part each work out so your body doesn't learn what to expect.
5. Feed it. Eat more than you are now. Protein. Carbs. And yes, some fats too. Add a protein supplement if needed to make sure you get enough protein. Protein builds muscle.
6. Sleep it. You gotta get your rest. This is when your body grows from the effort you put forth in the gym.
7. Hydrate it. Drink water. Lots of water.
8. Limit your cardio. That's not to say no cardio, but watch overdoing so you are not working against your bulking/adding size goals.
9. Be consistent. Don't miss a workout.
10. Be patient. You'll put on size. Just not a fast as some of the other guys with different body types.

This worked for me. I wish you well on your transformative journey to muscle dude. Time will go by anyway, so I said, let me try and see if this heavy weight lifting program I had been reading about worked. It did!

More than promising. The fact that you're out there making the effort every day puts you in a very small percentage of the population. @Flexxx knows what he's talking about, and is absolutely right about nutrition and rest.
I've always been the opposite, overweight, and there are different strategies to attain results.
I made a lot of progress on my own, doing a lot of research and some basic common sense things, but after a while I realized that I needed some personal help to keep moving in the right direction, so I started with a trainer recently, who adjusted my diet and has me doing things I never did before, and I've made faster progress in the past few weeks with him, than in the previous months. The key was finding the right trainer. Lots of gyms have trainers, but they're not all very good at what they do. I selected mine after watching him for a while, seeing the variety of people he works with, and seeing their results.

You need to lift heavier weights. A good resource for you is the book “Starting Strength,” by Mark Rippetoe.

You remind me of myself. @Flexxx put it well about diet and rest / sleep. It's self-evident that he fucking knows a lot. A lot of what I've recently read and have begun to apply to myself with some results is to train intensely and get to the point where you can feel you muscles burn towards the end of your sets. It's when you feel this that you will trigger your muscles to grow bigger so that they can handle the increased workload that you have given it. Don't do what I did for a long while, and that is to work with weight that was so heavy that I would max out before I felt any burn.

Thank you everyone for your input. I can’t really pay for a personal trainer at the moment, so would need to rely on my own instinct. So from what I understand, eating a lot (calorie surplus), lifting more and more every few weeks, doing different body parts each day, not skipping exercises and getting good sleep.
Do you think 3 times a week is good enough? I have a very busy work life and literally wouldn’t find time to do more days... or otherwise I wouldn’t have any social life.
Other than anything else, in your honest opinion how do I look?

How do u look ? You look thin like myself at your age and there is nothing wrong with that, you look good. Its actually a gift to have the base you are working with. Most important thing is to stick to your exercise regiment and never stop. The process takes time so you must be patient and put in the work. Plus you have received some real good advice here which is so valuable.

You got some solid advice. Some of it is a little more advanced than others. But a basic suggestion is to try adding another 1-2 days at the gym and back that up with some more protein, whether it is a shake or food.

Make sure you are pushing yourself too and not just going through the motions. Obviously a trainer can push you, but they are expensive. Try going with friends or using a app. I use one called FitBod to keep things mixed up and I really like it.

The "social life" of lifters includes a lot of time with other lifters with the same goals. They will become your friends. They don't give a damn if you like to suck dick. As long as you're serious in the gym, most will admire your enthusiasm.
Do you mean alcohol consumption or other recreational drugs? Those drugs will ruin your gains.

Thank you everyone for your advice! Thats a great set of responses.
We're all in this together, all trying to improve ourselves. Also, it's very nice to see when someone shows appreciation. Ask anything you like. There are very knowledgeable people on this thread.

I hope you're not saying that the burn is just getting a good pump, because I can get a pump with little girly weights but that won't make my muscles stronger and bigger.

Overloading your muscles by using heavier weight than normal forces your body to adapt in the only way it can... by growing.

No, I'm not saying that, @Flexxx . What I'm trying to say is that I used to do too heavy a weight with shitty and sloppy form, never really getting any pump because the weight was always too heavy. I dropped the weight some, cleaned up my form, and then I was able to get to the burn and see results.
By all means, do NOT do the "3 sets of 10" lame recipe that you see in those magazines targeted to lazy fat guys. You have do your sets like your life depends on whether or not you can complete the sets. Then make yourself do more reps when you think you cannot do any more. It's at this point when you'll be effective.

I actually think you look pretty good....definitely atheletic....lots of guys in my mms gym have similar bodies....boxers also......ripped to bone....some musculature on a lanky frame

However aesthetically....the down side to your body.....is it looks best when your shirt is off?......in regular cloths you just look like a skinny dude

But all in all pretty good bod....better than 80percent of Americans.....so it a pretty good end point.....and a great starting point...depending on where you want to go

Advice.....no one has taught more new guys to get strong than mark rippetoe

I also look at form videos from Alan thrall at untamed strength....who I just btw is rippetoe taught strength coach

No need for trainer.....I'm sure the world class experts on YouTube are more knowlegable than the guy at your local planet fitness....who has scrawny legs wrapped in a track suit
