Basically if you find certain sounds or voices calming and relaxing ASMR is for you. I use it to help me get to sleep. Apparently if you are susceptible to gentle stroking/tickling for example on the insides of your forearms, making you go soggy headed and super relaxed, then ASMR might work for you too.
It is supposed to induce tingles in the head and shoulders particularly. For me when I see/hear a video that works for me I get what feels like a flooding of dopamine or serotonin in my head and the sensation then flows down through my neck to my head and shoulders. At its best it is truly lovely.
There is little science behind it is not clear yet, but I reckon that if you enjoyed lots of tender loving and touching when you were a baby/child that sets off those sensations.
Many of the ASMR artistes fight against it being sexual. I can see why as many times it is not, and they want to keep it from being associated with porn.
