I saw a how to grow vanilla indoors post on Pinterest, and thought of you, @Tight_N_Juicy

I think my vanilla is possibly my *favorite* plant in my collection.

It's grown a whole FOOT in less than a year, and when I ordered it I was terrified I would kill it!

She's doing great, actually needs repotted as soon as my perlite comes in the mail. (I can't find any in town to save my life)

(Excuse the mess in the background, I'm constantly rearranging the green pets and sometimes the jungle gets a lil crazy)

Edit: you can see on the bottom where it was kinda stunted after transport, but once it acclimated to my climate/home it took off and won't stop. I friggin LOVE IT

Indeed, it's a Phaleanopsis species. I've been looking for them basically ever since beginning my orchid hobby.. started out with the typical hybrid phals you always find in grocery stores and typical flower shops. As I learned about all the different types I realized I really wanted to keep track of the lineages of my orchids so I started buying from a reputable orchid nursery in California.

So far I have 3 different Laelia types, a Monnierara Millennium Magic "Witchcraft" (which is a catesetum type orchid), a variegated Vanilla Planifolia vine, a Sharry Baby oncidium, and the Phal. Sumatrana will be the 4th Phaleanopsis species in my collection.

Before that I already had 11 of the typical hybrid phals from home depot and places like that. Very happy with how it's been going, I haven't lost an orchid in about 3 years if I'm remembering/estimating time accurately.
I've not had any luck with orchids. Probably the drafty winter air in the room where I kept them...

It took me awhile, and quite a bit of research but I finally figured out the best set-up for my climate and the kinds of orchids I do best with. Still going to explore with other kinds in the future, but for now I'm expanding my Phal. Species summer blooming collection :)

We need flower/plant emojis

Houseplants can be additive, orchids are for sure, it is hard to pass up a well grown unusual flowering or green plant. My numbers are down from earlier years (100s) as I get older but still large (70s) for regular people. My green friends are of many types and sizes mostly unusual and rare tropical and temperate plants.

funny
your mention of orchids

as lived on island in our gulf
100 kms n/east of mainland NZ,but reputedly a couple of degrees warmer
every winter,i used to pick a bunch of early blooming orchids for the owners wife, back on the mainland
they were growing in pots,on the deck, outside

New Houseplants can be additive, orchids are for sure

Got a pot for the Violacea, a light cotton candy pink to compliment the purple, slightly sparkly flowers.

She has never flowered, but hopefully next summer she'll grow her first spike and give me a lovely little show.

It's kinda funny, flowers are the reproductive system for plants that grow them. I'm basically looking at plant 'ginas and sniffing them for my own pleasure.

This is a close up of one of many splendid tulips in Monet's Garden. This Parrot Tulip intrigued me with its' ruffled petals and curled themselves.
