As to the Wal-Mart or mall situations, most guys wear loose-fit shorts or clothing, unlike 20+ years ago. Also, guys are not as trim as they were in the past (even younger/college-age guys) so looser clothing is worn to hide more mistakes made eating things like Hardee's burgers 5 days a week.

Men are trained from the vary earliest days of their lives that all aspects of their penis must be covered and kept away from all eyes because it's dirty. Over the years, they become very good at hiding any evidence of a penis in their pants.

Break apart a cheap digital camera. Many of them have a CCD pickup that is extremely sensitive to near and mid IR radiation. If the camera is sensitive to 12~9 nM wavelengths - well there you go, you have a super secret spy device that LOOKS through clothes. Well, at least it will illustrate the difference in heat on the surface of the clothes.



(I am leaving one vital clue out of this - creative, specific wavelength saturation of the area can definitely penetrate layers. Sony made a series of cameras that were redesigned because they inadvertently produced this effect in "Night Shots" mode - remember that scandal friends?)

The only time I really notice is if the person is wearing athletic shorts. I saw this at dining halls all the time in college but I guess the only other reliable time would be if you go to a gym. Otherwise you're probably not missing that much, unless the guy has an erection you're probably not going to spot it through pants.

That's been changing, though. Most of the guys here in SD are wearing pants and jeans that fit well; some are even wearing them snug. The baggy look persists only in the poorer parts of town, but is no longer mainstream.
