How comfortable are men with being nude in communal showers and locker rooms in your country or culture?

I agree. I think a lot of guys who are maybe a bit unsure at first would see others going for open, give it a try and not look back. I reckon that might be the case for some of the younger guys at my gym.
Correct. Of the five showers along the room my gym would have been better doing a cubicle either side of three open ones rather than five cubicles. It’s an all men OG “institution” in town - more of a gentlemen’s club than a gym. Everyone knows each other - so some of the legends who have been members for years jam the doors open to allow the conversation to continue with those outside. It faces two plunge pools - one an ice bath and the steam and saunas where all but the young new members are new. There’s also no door between that and the gym. I have never been in a gym with less of a gay vibe. But it’s good fun with all the old timers who all seem to have dozens of hilarious stories. The problem has been keeping it going with a younger crew - they are slowing joining up. Some of them are sons of the dads and all the young blokes once they get used to it say that, while on paper a men Only gym would not be on their list, the banter and friendship is so good the place becomes a favorite.

I suspect the decision to build in the gang shower was a reaction to the fear that the young-wouldn’t join. They are still not joining in huge numbers.

so a mistake all round. If you are correct that young blokes get used to it and enjoy it. It’s certainly good for body image and bonding with other men in friendship.

as I said, I have never experienced or witnessed anything remotely sexual. But the communal nudity is definitely a feature of the change- sauna-pool-shower area and part of the magic of the place.

and this I say as a man who is more than happy to “dabble” if something sexual is on offer. I actually prefer this gym because there is nothing sexual. The friendship and chat is more important to me.

In my school days (1960s), we had PE and sports that practically forced us to be naked in the showers at least once a day.

After college, I coached high school sports from 1974 to 2020, so I've seen the shyness and body fear growing over the decades.

Several things changed over that time and they all conspired to bring about a male youth who abhors nudity. Earlier, someone mentioned growing up with your own bedroom and bathroom. That's one of the phenomena.

Another is the more common access to porn. The internet has brought huge-porn dicks into every boy's bedroom in video. No one measures up to those, and every guy is afraid if he gets naked the dude beside him with have a footlong.

Another is the growth of gay culture. It used to be that being teased about being gay after popping a boner in the locker room lasted an hour or two. Now it would get posted in social media, go viral, and wreck a reputation forever. It is terrible about how such a normal thing as a boner had the potential to traumatize a dude.

Another is the lack of good communication about sex at home, in school, and more. In Quora, there's a forum called Boys ask Men. Every day at least a dozen boys post asking if their 5-incher is normal. The answer from the men is always "yep, normal" but do the boys accept the answer. With no opportunity to see other dudes and the hugeness of porn, they'll always be confused.

Another is the lack of role models. Do dads show their sons what they look like nude? Do coaches let their team see them naked? Of course not, you'd be jailed for years. In the 1960s I saw my dad naked, my coaches showered with the boys, swim instructors changed with the boys. I am cut and my dad was not. So, I had to go elsewhere to see other cut cocks. Bravely, I asked my uncles and cousins to show me their penises. No hesitation, they whipped them out.

In 2010, the school where I coached still had gang showers. They were the perfect place to store tacking dummies for football. The showers were never turned on. PE was no longer required and spots teams went home sweaty.
What a great and thoughtful response!

We're just in an unusual moment (at least at my gym in the USA) where the cultural norm is for the guys to wear baggy sweatpants or knee-length shorts and 90% of the women, regardless of age or body type, are wearing yoga pants or skin-tight short shorts. (The other 10% are wearing sweat pants.) I'm in my 50s and never before in my life have I seen women in public wear any clothing cut quite like that to show off their ass crack and every curve like that -- and it's totally socially acceptable and the norm. They just walk in off the street dressed that way for their workout and don't change in the locker room.

The right color fabric and they look completely nude. I can also tell you from - ahem - paying close attention that over 90 percent of these women aren't wearing underwear either. Mind you, as a straight guy with a particular fondness for female asses, I'm in NO WAY objecting, but it's pretty weird to me. Also, typically, the women's sweat pants tend to be more of a snug fit than what the guys wear.

Yep. No complaints from
Me either - but, Women say they can wear very provocative clothes but woe betide a man who reacts to that. Equally men are covering up their bodies. Is this just fashion or something deeper.

I’ve recently joined a gym with open showers, which is new to me. There are a few cubicles and I assumed most would opt for them, even if it meant having to wait.

I’m 27 and assumed those using the open showers would be older guys who grew up in a different era of casual nudity, and anyone my age or younger would be too modest.

Happily I quickly realised the majority actually choose open! Lots of uni age students use the gym and most just shower naked with whoever is there at the time. It’s really refreshing actually, and guys seem more chill about nudity than at my old gym which was cubicle only and saw lots of awkward towel stuff when changing in and out of underwear etc. I actually got a few weird looks for just pulling my pants down.

Here, quite a few guys walk back to their lockers from the showers naked. Hardly anyone bothers with towel dances - boxers come off, trunks go on, willies aren’t hidden. We’re all men, we come in different sizes, own what you have and stop the pointless shyness.

it seems more friendly and less uptight - I didn’t know about the showers until I joined but it’s made for a better experience. Not only do I feel it’s more comfortable than being crammed into a cubicle I genuinely think it’s good for guys to be comfortable being naked together without it being sexual.

So glad open showers are still a thing!
That's a great insight. And it's good to hear even younger guys aren't shy.

In my gym it's single show cubicles, put the pool I go to is communal showers. The openness of the showers continues in the locker room with way less towel dancing and modesty. In the gym it tends to be more towels than not, although plenty, myself included let it all hang out.

My gym has a pool which I think lends itself more to nakedness than just a gym. Definitely less shyness than my previous gym which was cubicles. Just been today and showered with 3 guys in their early-mid 20s. All of us were naked, there was a little checking each other out subtly, but it was chill.

There is actually a pool at my gym, but it's only really usable for two. Plus where it's situated in relation to the locker rooms is less than ideal. I prefer the public pool which is close by, even though the place is a little shabby, it busy and open. Depending on when I go, the crowd will vary from young to old. I've seen guys go in there modest, wearing their swim shorts, then part way through removing them, after maybe realizing it's really not a big deal.

I think it is also healthy to look in a subtle way. When you're naked with more guys it's nice to feel admiration for some part of the body and look at each other without feeling competition.

I would like to go to that gym for men, I think it would reinforce much more the concept I have of nudity between men. As a nudist I think that places like this are lacking in some cities. In my gym I feel very tied to social rules (going covered in the shower, 20-year-olds who think showering is gay, not looking at anyone naked...) I'm very tired of that kind of thinking.

had a short weekend trip with some new mates and they were all ready to strip in the gym and work out shirtless but when it came time to sleep

they were so caught up trying to find spare tees to sleep at the mall cause they forgot to bring spare? I found out I was the only one that slept nude/in boxers and I wonder if they just didnt wanna sleep in their undies in the same room

Correct. Who the fuck needs a tee shirt to sleep. Or even worse, undies..?? You let the boys out for bedtime. Born free as free as the wind blows.

cute pajamas are ok only if they are to impress someone special.

but freeballing is mandatory for a Y chromosome.

as for men sleeping in a dorm or shared hotel room, cabin or something. If you’re shy, lose the undies under the covers. But no bloke would mind you bare arsing to get into bed.

am I wrong?

straight men have a lot of head trauma. Being masculine to me also means not giving importance to what other men think. it's not all about drinking beer, burping and smelling like sweat
