How comfortable are men with being nude in communal showers and locker rooms in your country or culture?

Men should NOT feel uncomfortable showering in the gym communal shower or being nude in men's locker room, since we are all the same especially if we have the sexy bodies. Even girls don't feel uncomfortable showering in front of other girls, why should men be ashamed of their bodies? Men should be strong, and being naked is just natural. Being nude in front of other men makes you feel like they are your friends/buddies, and that you are not afraid and have nothing to hide :)

They are not "ashamed of their bodies".

I have not observed a single instance of towel-dancer or stall-changer hiding his whole body while attempting to change.

Almost all of them will strip to their underwear, revealing >90% of their body, regardless of how grossly out of shape they might be.

Given that in the US, nearly 3 out of 4 are medically overweight, a little shame would probably please the CDC.

What I do increasingly observe, and in emphatically not pervy, bro-vibe health clubs (no "it's because of the old creeps" excuse there) is "bros" taking their sweaty shirt off right in the front of the mirror, "showering" with recycled paper towels, and then checking themselves out to no end, iPhone in hand.

Conceit in male youth can be cute...but this is pathological narcissism at its worst.

Some shame would be good actually...

Well I'm based in the US and live in a suburban area of a large city in the south. I belong to a gym and don't go as much as I should, plus rarely use the locker room facilities. When I did some during the pre Covid days, I noticed guys didn't really get naked except for a few seconds to put on or remove their towel and underwear. Showers had stalls and there were more than a few guys who would just pull their underwear on while still wrapped in their towel, only to drop it as they reached their waste.

The gym was probably 90% suburban dads which probably contribued to the circumstances I've referenced.

Same here. I just strip down and walk around naked. I get the stares all the time.

Anyone who knows about France and Italy?
In France, almost nobody gets naked in gyms, most showers are cubicles and when it's communal, you will see people showering in their underwear.
In swimming pools, there mainly are changing cubicles with showers for everyone (men, women and kids) and showering nude is prohibited. Welcome :expressionless:

En France aussi?

So much for the comically irrational comments (invariably from self-flagellating Americans) about this sorry trend stemming from our "Puritanical" roots.

I would like to know how comfortable are men with nudity in public spaces or among peers in your country or culture? Especially I am talking about gym showers, locker rooms, dorms, communal showers, public baths, and even nudist beaches or lakes.

My question comes because it has been discussed extensively here and in another site, how open showers and communal showers are disappearing in the United States and other countries in the west. That the last two generations are more prudish about being nude in front of others, that most gyms or sports facilities are taking privacy into consideration when designing locker room areas, and that in general men are less comfortable with being around other naked men, some people even see it as gayish, I guess meaning homoerotic.

But, that's not true for other countries. From Russian banyas, Finland saunas to Korean spas or Japanese sento, to name a few, it seems that men in other cultures still have no problem with getting naked in front of each other. A friend from New Zealand told me that men down under are more open to getting naked than Americans for example. Also, in some countries in Latin America men still feel comfortable with nudity among guys and open showers are still the norm.

What do you think? How's it in your country or culture?
In my country and in my experience, men don't care unless they have something of a fetish for seeing other men naked and bemoan the trend toward more privacy blaming that trend on homophobia.

By the way, did "our Puritanical roots" not apply in America 20 or 10 year ago, when most guys would think nothing of casual, non-sexual nudity in gender-segregated athletic settings?

Did our alleged "Puritanical roots" suddenly re-emerge in the last decade or so, perhaps by witchcraft?

Come to think of it, does anyone believe that men, back in our "Puritanical roots", would hide from one another and cringe at the sight of another nude man?

Anyone from 19th century England on LPSG? Can someone confirm that in men-only boarding schools, male students would bathe in individual wash rooms and wear a Victorian burka when getting out of the tub?

Sweden here, people are pretty chill being naked. Young guys cover up more, but everyone showers naked. Seldom cubicles, never with door.

I Just took a swim in an outdoor pool. The shower in the men's lockerroom was really cold. There was another guy showering. Because of the cold water I just said something like "it's so cold my willy is shrinking". His response: it doesn't look so small.

As to France and Italy it wrong that no one is comfortable naked in France. Both NEO and Circles had communal showers and an occasional Muslim did the underwear shower most did not. My gym in Nice was also communal with no cover ups. Italy varied. At a Catholic House (dorm style rooms rented to priests and pilgrims) in Rome we each had a private room but there was one big shower room for 3 floors with 12 showers. In the morning was a long naked line of good Catholics. The joke was that it was shopping time, they would check out people and invite them for a prayer or some ruse to get them naked in private. I was staying there for two months and maybe because of my light hair color I got sucked off twice a day.

When I was in college, I took a backpacking trip in Italy and stayed mostly in hostels and similar places. Most of them have communal showers, and everyone (most of them young students like me) uses them naked.

I think you're right that different people want different levels of privacy. But the reason for this thread is to see how that differs in other countries and cultures and understand why men want more privacy in the present day compared to previous generations. Human behaviour changes over time, but there's always a reason or various.
Thanks for the acknowledgement but I suspect the reason for the thread is to talk about men getting naked in front of other men more than it is to explore the cultural norms of the same and the drivers of change in those norms. Perhaps I just don't find it very interesting where others find it very titillating.

Korean spa report:

I was at Spa World in Virginia near the Washington DC Dulles Airport on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

As expected, it was busy (but not overly crowded), which was ideal for me looking for a scene of men being comfortable lounging around other nude men. There was one guy who, as he got out of the pools, covered his package with his hand whenever he walked around. When he showered in the open showers, the only time his hand left his crotch was when he was facing the wall. At first I was trying to figure out if he was trying to hide an erection, but based on the position of his hand, that wasn't it. He seemed to be comfortable hanging out for an extended period of time in a room of full of openly hanging manhood of different shapes and sizes, so I'm not entirely sure what he might have been shy about. But I had a good time hanging out letting it all hang out.

Maybe he was self conscious about his size?

Or even trying to be modest about his size. :)

Just being there in an environment like that might have been a big step for him. In my younger years, I would have felt pretty awkward/uncomfortable. You never know what people are going through.

Hopefully he'll feel more relaxed about it if and when he goes back.

That's true too.

How old would you guess he was?

Probably in his 30s.

Reasonably fit and kind of beefy for the record as well. Nothing IMO to be ashamed of, a lot to be proud of.

Ah okay. .

It is odd who is shy and who isn't, when It comes to the locker room. I've seen guys in the gym locker room comfortable baring all when they're on the small side, tiny even. And super shy guys with very generous endowments.
