Lying flat or standing should be the same distance in my book. Never tested it, just my attempt at "common sense".
Sitting up, I would guess the distance would be significantly shorter.
I guess the distance is different among guys - different heights and builds, but (again) my take on "common sense" would be that an average guy would be approximately 8" from base to navel.
