As a result of coronavirus restrictions and clinics forced to close, there is a nationwide shortage of donors and this has led to a disturbing Wild West-style trade in human sperm being hawked across the internet and social media. Facebook, in particular, hosts dozens of specialist groups where men offer their services and women ask for help.

Clive Jones, a retired 65-year-old maths teacher from Derby, claims he has fathered 116 children acting as a sperm donor over the past eight years
With loneliness at record levels and opportunities to meet the opposite sex at a minimum, the market for DIY babies is booming – despite the accompanying risks of genetic problems, fraud and long-term issues. But as one woman, a primary school teacher, told The Mail on Sunday last week, she has spent years trying to find the right man and now has had enough of waiting. While some women she knows are resorting to private ‘arrangements’, through friends or friends of friends, others, like herself, are turning to the online world.

Do you think online sperm trade should continue. Would you ever participate to sperm donation and become a father to that many children.

I have some reservation, on the authenticity of the article. The Teacher even if he started donating in his late 50s. The typical legit sperm bank, has cut off ages for donors. I believe between 19 and 40 typically. The age of the male can an increased possibility of premature and other complications. Women are just not that desperate

Granted Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, will have a line of women accepting donations from them, when they are in their 80s
The average guy; and I saw the photo of the teacher, he is average . So unless he is a PHD teacher ; and not a pensioned grade school teacher, I just do not see the logic

The Daily Mail is a rag! That's said, I know that private arrangement do happen. I overheard a conversation at a party about a service which would put lesbian couples in touch gay men so the lesbian couples could have a babies. The guy would ejaculate into a syringe and the partner of the woman who was become pregnant could then squirt it inside her. This may have started because of official sperm banks not supplying to women who were not married to a man but it also has the advantage of being simple, convenient and cheap. Unless there are fertility problems one doesn't need IVF and I am not sure one could accuse those involved of being immoral. How does that compare, for example, with official sperm banks who seem to have managed to take a resource, sperm, which is supremely plentiful compared to how much is needed, such that the vast majority of it is wasted, and sell it for a premium.

As for people desperate to have babies being prevented by the pandemic, surely that would only be a concern for women who have left it to the last possible moment and were proposing to have a baby by someone who doesn't live with them. By the time the vast majority of responsible couples consider they are ready for a baby they will be at least cohabiting even if not married so there should be nothing (other than existing children) to prevent them from having the necessary sex.
