First was an emergency C-Section, the next two were natural.

C-Sections are excellent when necessary, however I found it easier (and quicker) to recover from the natural births.

* though from what I read natural tears have been found to heal quicker and better than surgical cuts in these circumstances.

I agree with this. I was cut and stitched after my first VBAC (vaginal birth after Cesarean) and the recovery was painful.

For my second VBAC, I said no cutting. I ended up tearing (and required more stitches than an episiotomy), but the natural tears healed more quickly and with less scar tissue. In fact, much of the scar tissue from the original episiotomy completely went away.

Is it really possible for someone to have FIVE Cesarean Sections?

Seems to me that doctors don't even like giving one Caesarean Section. So to have five seems a bit unlikely to me. Especially considering that after the first time and subsequent times the scar would be more tender and prone to damage / re-tearing.

That's just my initial thought.

If anyone is wondering, myself and my (half) sister were both born naturally.

It is uncommon but not unlikely. Some of my inlaws have had large families all by c-section. Depends on the doctors and the medical reasons. My sis-in-law was diabetic and they insisted on all c-sections for her five. Her eldest child my niece was not diabetic but they c-sectioned all her children including the twins. Not certain why in her case.

Ive heard the docs say they don't like to see more than 4 on one woman because of the chances of rupture, scarring, healing, etc.

My sis in law has had four- the first 3 were the vertical and the last one was bikini (she said it was much easier than the vertical)

My scar is pretty small, but it does have scar tissue deep underneath that gives me some problems. I had to have extra work done on the right side because of hemorraging. I was bleeding pretty badly during the labor so it wasnt surprising that when the placenta detached that i bled out 1,200 cc's and needing to be put under general anesthesia to be sewn up.

It was horrible not just because of the c-section but the blood loss made everything much more difficult to do. My pelvis is really too small for even my 6 lb infant that i should have had a c-section scheduled. I dont mind being a part of the c-section statistic because if we didnt have that technology- we both would be dead right now.

This c-section video only proves just how invasive the whole procedure is. Regardless how you feel about natural versus c-section....some of them are truly necessary and im thankful for that option.

Yes it is possible though in my experience it hasnt often happened. One patient i nursed had 4 c sections, all singletons, and was pregnant again which of course was another c section. She was adamant she wouldnt be sterilised hence why she ended up with so many surgucal procedures being performed. Her consultant said to her at the time that had she delivered bigger babies, even average sized, she would have been in so much more trouble scar wise. Her biggest baby was just 5lbs 2oz.

Definately! The amount of people who have said to me a c section is easier. What alot forget is that is major surgery and painful afterwards

Diabetes is one reason for a fair few c sections being performed due to babies of diabetics being slightly higher birth weights so therefore cannot fit through the birth canal. If the mother doesnt take care of herself as in her diet the risk of a massive size baby is higher still.Though,it is a longer healing time for diabetics.

My wife had childbirth--26 hours labor, child born with arm wrapped around neck, so there was some trimming. Not completely c section....

It was either a c section or it wasnt.

Did she have an incision across her bikini line to lift the baby from?

Or,did she have an episiotomy which is being cut vaginally to ease the baby out? Sometimes using forceps or ventouse.

I find a lot of this quite fascinating. Someone I know had a child naturally the first time, but had to have a c-section for the 2nd child. They said it was because the child was facing the wrong way meaning it would have been a breach baby, but do they really go through the effort of a c-section just for that?

Yes as delivering a breech baby can be dangerous as usually the birth canal widens due to the widest part of the baby being the shoulders. If the breech baby comes out bum first that is more difficult a delivery but possible.Delivering the head last can cause damage to the babies neck/head/brain...note i said can.

If babies feet start to present first then normal delivery isnt possible as the feet can and probably would start to present before the cervix is dilated 10cms.The cervix wouldnt be open enough to allow the rest of the babies body through and then there is a danger of baby being stuck and starved of oxygen.

I have not personally seen a c section being performed when the babies feet and legs were out of the vagina but heard of it and the surgeon who told me assured me that it was extremely dangerous and the baby had nerve damage which couldnt ever be corrected.

Soumds like a lot of c-sections are last minute emergency situations. Do they ever plan them weeks or months in advance and if so why would they?

Yes. C-sections can be scheduled for many reasons:

  • Baby is in breech (bottom first) or transverse (sideways) position.
  • Multiples are very often delivered by c-section. Twins are a maybe, triplets and up are nearly always c-section as far as I know.
  • Previous c-section - discussed above and in another thread recently, VBAC is possible, preferable even, but many women and or their Obs elect a repeat c-section.
  • Mother has had invasive uterine surgery (e.g. a myomectomy, surgical removal of fibroids).
  • Placenta previa - that is the placenta is partly or fully covering the cervix.
  • Macrosomia, that is a very large baby. (More likely with gestational diabetes).
  • Mother is HIV-positive and blood tests indicate a high viral load.
  • Baby has an abnormality / condition that would make a vaginal birth risky.

in the case of my sis, some vaginas have basic design flaws.

or post cervical cancer...a badly scarred cervix may not stretch so well.

and i guess victims of genital mutilations may well need one too.

Yes they do plan in advance alot of times.Various reasons eg small pelvimetry, placenta praevia, certain STI's inc gonorrhea, certain conditions of the mother, previous c sectionsbaby being far to big due to diabetes inc gestational diabetes to name but a few reasons.

Breech isnt always a reason, bum first is more difficult to deliver but possible.Feet first isnt.

Twins depending on the above and also dates of gestation.Triplets and more are usually C Sections

I hope all the 'pussy lovers' on this site read this thread and realize what they are getting into with their female partner!!! Making babies is serious.

Natural for me the one and only time - 20 years ago by Lamaze. She was 6 lbs 3 oz so a small episiotomy was necessary. Of course she felt like she weighed 40 lbs! I knew I was going to have to have a section, but doc knew what she was talking about.

Uh... are you being sarcastic? Not familiar with many of your other posts so it's hard to tell, but I detect some snide sarcasm. Otherwise I would direct you to one of my other threads http://www.lpsg.org/141346-getting-annoyed-with-the-comparison-2.html#post2244745
