I know most of the ladies on here love everything Felis catus and anyone who knows anything about myself also knows I'm an unabashed Cat Dad. So this got me thinking.

Historically cats have been associated almost totally with women ("pussy", witches, "She's acting catty", etc.) and while many women may also like, or even prefer dogs more; the latter pet seems more like a "guy thing". I think this is mainly due to the differences in animal personalities. Cats think of their owners (or their servants such as it is) as their parents and caring for them is more maternal versus dogs who view humans as the Alpha of the pack and the relationship is more of the paternal authority figure. Because of these gender role differences, I see more women wanting a pet they can nurture, while men more want one they can lead or dominate and I believe this is one of the main reasons very few men are exclusively "cat people", as well as their fear what others might think of them.

I have read numerous articles that allegedly claim some women view cat dudes positively as someone who is more caring, in touch with their feelings and more nurturing (and thus maybe making a better parent of humans). While others have claimed some view men negatively or at least suspiciously as maybe some nebbish loner or even questioning his sexuality if he's straight. Bear in mind, all this mostly refers to single guys, as it seems most men in relationships either own both cats & dogs or if exclusively cats, it was more due to the choice of the female half of the couple (my case not withstanding :emoji_smile_cat:).

So I'm just curious to hear a woman's opinion on this. Of the men you've known or been involved with, do you feel those who prefer one animal over the other have distinct personalities to that choice and have they treated you or others in a different manner based upon whether they are a "cat or dog person"? How do you view men who only prefer cats or may have several of them? Do you see them as a more sensitive, enlightened guy or think they are the male version of the neighborhood Cat Lady and something is a little off there? Just think of it as what would your automatic first impression be of such a guy if you were meeting them for the first time, either in a dating or other social situation, based upon just knowing that fact alone.

I realize maybe this is a strange question, but I know the great, patient ladies here get tired of all never-ending BS dick size questions; so while I don't post often in this section, when I do I like to keep it light and make you think. You're welcome ;) :D .

I like a guy who likes animals in general. He better like cats, because I have two. I’m actually neither a cat person, nor a dog person. The only reason I don’t have a dog is because I’m not home enough for a dog. My roomies have a dog. I love her.

Currently, I have visitors who brought their dogs. So I have a full house of animals.

Pets are neither masculine or feminine. There are some bad ass men who love cats. Norman Reedus and Snoop Dog, for example.

If they somehow hate cats, I don't think I'd trust them. Really if they *hate* any animal, I'd not trust them. I love all critters, though I will not be happy if a flying bug comes at me, or a spider invades my space. Little leggy George is hiding in the car, I'm cool with that. He just has to stay in his lane. You come at me and it's game over. Lol

Really though, I love cats, my guy loves cats. There's nothing "sensitive" about caring about an animal. It just makes you a decent human, of which, we are severely lacking in this world.

Being generous with kindness and affection is a good thing. Denying creation's greatest murder floofs either? I will chase you to my village boundaries throwing rock and flaming cat poop bombs.

I has doggos snd kittehs. Anyone in my life must love doggos and kittehs.

Dudes with cats? Hell, yeah! They buck convention. And understand cats. They will understand the etiquette of meeting new cats.

Wheezy does not give up the belly on.a first date. Ya better woo his chonky self with snacks and a good ear tussle first.

I love all animals in general, however always owned dogs. Now, for the question at hand. I find a man who loves something other than himself ( is responsible pet owner) says a lot about the individual.....Just from my dating history, I seemed to get along better with dog owners versus cat owners, ( there were many other variables to attribute to this factor) but (IMO) male dog owners were aligned to my personal preferences etc versus the cat owners.

well i may be soft on kittehs but i love all animals, and would have a huge menagerie if i could. omg...cats, dogs, turtles, birds and more, no doubt no doubt

the man i was last involved with had very limited experience except dogs & horses but his heart could fit all the animals. that's all i really care about.

i am only bothered by the staunchly one camp or another if they badmouth the other camp. that's no bueno

from what i can tell online, cat guys usually seem pretty accepting of different animals besides cats, which i like a lot.

Thank you to all the ladies for the responses so far. Based upon some answers maybe my question might have been better served as to one's opinion is of guys that love animals in general and does that make those men more sensitive and caring partners. Being biased towards cats, I naturally went in a specific direction. One does have to admit that at the end of the day a single man who only owns cats is a much more statistical rarity than one who has either just a dog or both; especially when compared to a woman who only has cats.

While I don't dislike dogs per say and would treat one with the same human kindness I do for my feline children; there is just no conceivable situation I could think of where I would ever find myself owning one. So it's not so much I am critical of canines or their owners; I just choose not to be around them.

I also realized too late to change things that the title might have sounded better as "How do you feel about men with cats", but alas is hindsight.

You all have made me think and hope I have done the same :emoji_smiley_cat:.

It's one of my criteria for any serious relationship, I love cats and that means anyone living with me needs to love them too. I also love dogs, I love all of our furry friends. I find cats especially interesting, they're affectionate, inquisitive and assholes all at the same time, any guy who digs that too immediately scores points.

What’s funny? I am conflicted as to whether humans have the right to own pets.
I’m adamantly against wild animals being captured and held as pets. And I am against breeders and mills that pump out kittens and puppies in the name of profit.
I see this in the same vein as keeping cows or sows pregnant for human wants. And somewhere, I do see it as assembly line rape.
Meat, and pets, are a product of manipulating a female of a species for gain.
Adopt an abandoned animal or take the oopsie fuzzball when the neighbor’s dog or cat gets out? Sure.
I had a rescue chinchilla as a kid. We had ducks. I have no idea why.
We had horses, none purebred.

I have no answer. Only a place where I feel and think that we are doing wrong by other females, no matter the species.

He's told me before that he's not a cat person. I understand that there are people who don't care for animals, and while I can't understand their situation I'll respect it to a point. And that point is just before animal abuse.

Well, he's the one that helped me get my kitty. And he petted her and put up with her constant mewing when she was little.

But that morning when I came back from the gym is burned into my mind. I came in through the laundry room and walked down the hall into the living room. And there he was on the sofa with the cat in his lap. He was stroking her and talking baby talk to her. He had no idea I was there. I watched them for a minute. He'd pause his hand and she would nudge it. I swear they kissed!

Busted! He loves Baby almost as much as me.

But he'll tell you he's not a cat person, but he is a Baby person.

Borrowing your mic to drop, Ms Scarlet.

All my critters are rescues, either from a local shelter or by finding the nufflins on the street.

I would like to see the end of pet mills, most specifically so of designer breeds. If a companion critter is desired shelters and the streets are full of very loving beings who could really use the glow up.

Don't consider the fuzz fam as being owned. I care for them. My job is to keep them healthy and happy as I can.

With the exception of our long departed 25 lb. fuzzball that we inherited from a family member, all our kitties have either come from a county shelter or been found outside as well. Although with our current little girl it wasn't so much that we found her as she found us and took her own liberty of the house and refused to leave.

But yeah, animal mills are sad, depressing places and the end of them (or at a minimum strict regulation) can't come soon enough. I guess that's at least the one advantage of cats since beyond show breeds, there is an inherent basis of them not having a monetary value and thus it is far less common to see them for sale at commercial, for-profit places in the way puppies and dogs are. In fact I can't remember the last pet store I actually saw kitties in cages and even dogs are thankfully becoming less visible there, so what bad publicity they have received must be working.

One thing I did enjoy seeing was the long overdue banning of the greyhound racing in this state and hopefully other places will follow suite ending the exploitation of animals for betting sports.

I'm allergic to cats. I think they're adorable, look cuddly and fluffy, but I just couldn't live with one in the house because of allergies. So, if the guy has a cat... It would be a problem.
