I always place the money into the cashiers hand. However, the way they hand it back to you says a lot about the store. Here in Ireland it is considered rude to hand you back the change by placing it onto the counter for you to pick it up (basically it says 'take your money and go/get out). The more up market (higher quality) stores will hand you back the money by placing it in your hand after counting it out to you.

it's just a question of ettiquete.

They receive notes that are folded up. They must unfold the notes themselves. It's all part of the plan...

I have a habit of folding notes, apparently most people don't do that.

If I am giving coins, then the cashier must watch patiently why I very carefully count it out.

Normally the coins are stacked in order of size...biggest on the bottom, smallest on the top.

I put the currency in their hands and they feel blessed

It's so hard for me to part with my money I never let go of it until the cashier gives it a tug.

When I was in college I worked for several retail stores and it breaks my heart that young people these days have lost the art of counting back your change. Now they just give you what the register says to give you and they mix the change, bills and receipt together in an awkward mess.

*sighs*

I have dyscalculia and I have never understood counting back change. I worked retail a lot in my youth and can make change in my head without a register. But I have never been able to figure out that counting back thing.

FWIW: No one at any store has ever said this is how you count back the change to the customer.

If I'm paying cash, I place the money in their hand. It's rude not to.

What bugs me is how some cashiers fold the money up in the receipt before handing it back, so then I have to unroll the receipt, unfold the notes, get the change out before I can put the notes into my wallet. What's wrong with just handing it back all open and easy to sort out? I know it's probably meant to be part of the customer service but it's a service that this customer doesn't appreciate.

Speaking as a pt cashier where I work,(I'm still ft in my regular position) I usually observe my customers just wait till the transaction has been totalled then hand off a $20 for small priced stuff. I really hate it tho, at the beginning of a shift, you have only a certain amount in your till, what does some jagoff do? Why, he/she(so as not to generalized!) hands me off a nice, crisp, $100 bill for a flyshit total of just under $20. And they always claim that's all they have, which is utter horseshit.
Now I'm wiped out of singles and fives after that, and have to request change whilst I got people backing up the aisles. And the fucking hell of it is- you can't refuse to take the c-note, or supervisor gets word and you get talked to.

I saw this thread and realized I never thought about this before, but I always hand the money directly to the cashier. The bills, from bottom to top, decrease in value with coin on top. Just setting it on the counter seems a bit rude.

I have my people take care of it.

Then I come out of my daydream and hand it to the person behind the counter as neatly as possible. Larger bills on the top, twenties, tens, fives, ones and then if I have change I place that in their hand as well.

There is a place near here where the male store workers take the money and return change to your hand; however, there are 2 women there who place all return change on the counter.

I never thought about this until I started working at my job off of the Navy base. I used to work at Popeyes chicken on the Pearl Harbor base. Then I left the job after I got a bit more pay at a job out in town. I am used to folks handing me the money, and I handed it back to them. They always handed me the money at any other job I have worked ( Over seas and the USA).

But, I was taken aback when I found at my job ( in Hawaii) that the customers sat the money down even if you have your hand out. I have had customers pile up wads of dollars and other money, then the loose change is spread all over and under the money pile. I have had these folks look like they were gonna hand you the money and actually dropped the damn money on the counter. Hell, today I had a customer put the money on the conveyor belt . I usually ask the customer to please not do that, because it will go in the belt ( DUH!!!). But, I was shocked to see that the guy was a NON- local. They also want to get angry that I don't hand them their change back once they make me pick it up from the damn counter. Or they get all impatient because they have to wait for their damn receipt. They wound not have to wait if they just hand me the damn money. It takes time picking up all those damn wads and unfolding them. I can't put them in the reg like that!! My boss would have my ass, or think I am NUTS.

I just want to know how do you hand your money to a cashier? Or it does not matter to you, cashiers are just dirt and they should be happy to even see your face and get YOUR money?

How do you feel about the ettiquette of handing money to and receiving money from cashiers? - Yahoo! Answers

Why don't customers hand the money? (serious answers only)? - Yahoo! Answers

If the cashier is ready then I hand it to them. If I have the money ready and they are doing something else I put it on the counter. I never give change unless the cashier asks if I have the change, as I use that as a savings account. I put in a jar to save for vacation.

Oh yeah, how about the opposite, cashiers who place the bills in your hand and then drop the change on top of the bills.
