How do you refer to the guy you share your life with?

Yes, it is. By calling him boyfriend rather than fiance you were pretty much saying you didn't want to get married, at least not to him. Or he may have felt that you were ashamed of him in some way.

Traditionally when a young woman becomes engaged she is so happy she wants to shout it from the mountain tops. The fact you insisted on still calling him your boyfriend was pretty much a death knell for the relationship. :frown1:

Well... the reason I didn't refer to him as fiance, is because people immediately went, "Oh, you got engaged!" and then they'd want to hear all about it... you get REAL freakn tired of explaining it day in and day out. So I would just call him my boyfriend (since he still was) and then tell people that we were engaged when I was in the mood to indulge them in our story.

It may be old fashioned but if a guy blows three months salary on a ring then he wants you to tell the world how he's your fiance, how much you're looking forward to marrying him, and how beautiful your ring is and, therefore, how wonderful he is. Guys like to be reassured that they're making the right choice when they commit to marriage and your obvious enthusiasm helps establish that.

The Rouxster or "houseboy". :biggrin1:

I usually refer to him as my boyfriend or partner to make it easy for anyone to understand although I find both terms lacking.

And what a hot fucking houseboy he IS! I do believe you will be fighting me, DC DEEP, Tawse and Bubba for squatter's rights next time you bring him around.

How about if you just refer to him by his name. When introducing him say "this is (insert name here)". If people already know you, they will be aware of the relationship, and people who don't can figure it out. I know a gay man who refers to his partner as "my man". He will say "this is my man, Jim".

Well, I never plan on getting married anyway, so hopefully it won't be an issue. I just don't feel like explaining our wedding plans to every person we meet between the time we get engaged and the time we get married. People hear "engagement" and they want to know details. It's just like being pregnant. Bleh.
