All three are all very gay friendly destinations. They each offer a different taste of the world.

Agree

South Africa i know nothing of.
NZ appears to be accepting now.
Australia seemed to be more Homophobic in the 60s-70s than NZ, but is quite accepting now, i would think.

Like most / many Countries, Tolerance is at the forefront? ha
Stupid, as we are not going away haha

Ive been to Cape Town SA and Melbourne/Canberra/Sydney Aus. Sydney and Melbourne are much bigger cities than Cape Town, but CT has a nice pace of life for white and middle/upper income folks. The diversity of population there slaps some Americans across the face. The setting of CT is awsomely insanely amazing.

Sydney is quite a big city, and has a large gay population and a fantastic location in Jackson Harbor. Melbourne reminds me a lot of Philadelphia with its monumental architecture. Both contain incredible neighborhoods with character and charm.

An Australian described the two to me once: Sydney is a young beautiful tart who flirts with everyone, Melbourne is a dignified and refined sophisticated lady. If CT was a woman, I think she would be a worldly and exotic, full of experience and contradictions.

I could live in any of those cities. I really want to visit New Zealand.

Melbourne sounds more like my taste.

Of course, those are my perspectives as an outsider. I'd love to hear what locals say about their cities.

What a great post.

Thanks. I am, at heart, a travel whore.

My dilemma has been North or South Island. North has Wellington, Auckland and huge volcanoes...but the South has glaciers, fiords and I'm curious about the reconstruction of Christchurch.

Who could have guessed that a little island like that would be were they filmed LOTR, Narnia, and countless other movies.

Melbourne's great! lived here all my life.

It's very different from all the other Australian cities, most of the others are more laid back in my opinion, a lot more sun surf and beach orientated like Gold Coast or Sydney.

Melbourne's got more a European feel, it's heavily cultured, multi-cultural and a melting pot of food, entertainment and sport. It's a face paced city during the day and full of pubs, bars, clubs at night. It some of the best restaurants in the world with a great range of cuisines. Food is so important in this city it's astonishing that when I leave this city I can taste the difference in food. The arts are heavily celebrated here, full of events like European Masters collections from Europe, Salavador Dali etc. Capital of sporting as well from the Australian Football, Grand Prix, Australian Open etc. The architecture is a mix of Victorian Era Grandeur mixed with Modernism side by side in the city centre. The public transit system and roads are great too.

I say it's a great and well balanced city, with a heavy passion for it's coffee. Coffee is not just a drink but an identity in this city, if you like cafe's and coffee and your food come here.

If you're the type of 'gay' that tends to like sophisticated, fancy, cultured things, Melbourne is the best bet!! If you're more into a more relaxed go with the flow feel I'd go for Sydney, although I've never been to Sydney.

But Melbourne isn't rated #1 Most livable city in the world twice in a row by the rest of the world for no reason :)

Personally found Melbourne more Arty Cultured than Brash young Sydney.

North Isand a small amount of time only haha (like just drive thru it 2-3 days max/no need to go North of Auckland fr eg) we dont have any great scenic value up here few Mountains middle of Island and Rotorua ..(Yellowstone - i am assuming)

South Island has ALL the Beauty .. Glaciers Rivers & Mountains out of this World
Ch Ch rebuild will be ongoing i think (personal, i believe it should be rebuilt elsewhere)
and they should take in HEAPs of Japanese advice ..
stubborn lot we can be, evidenced by my posts ha

The South African constitution protects gay rights, I am proud to say.
It's a real standout in Africa in that respect, isn't it?

When I was a child, my father had a heart attack. When he had somewhat recovered, he and my mother went away for a month. For those few weeks, his business partner, with his family, moved into the house and took care of us.

They were from South Africa and were fascinating people. Very different mores than Canadians have. It was a real education living with them and I'm sad that we've completely lost touch.

But ever since then, I've wanted to go to South Africa.

The constitution protects gay rights. Public exercise of said rights becomes tricky and dangerous in may cultural contexts outside of relatively more affluent pockets such as Capetown.

Coming from New Zealand I can say we're pretty gay friendly here.
We've got a bill going through the processes for same-sex marriage which has had a pretty favourable response so far.
Auckland has just re-established a Pride Festival, three weeks of events etc celebrating the "rainbow" community of Auckland.

Been to all three mentioned places. NZ is the best by far. When it comes to ranking, the city that wins is Sydney, just because all the bright lights attract the buterflies. Sydney is an amazing city, but for me, out of the three i would pick NZ again. And not just Auckland, just because it gives you the things you want to see, within terms of gay life. But other cites are great too, like Queenstown and Wellington.
