I sometimes wonder if being homosexual (not necessarily quite the same as 'gay', but take your pick) would be quite the same if there were no such thing as underwear.

I like it. I like wearing my briefs, or boxer briefs. Occasionally a thong.

When I was in high school (early 70's - USA) I took a trip to NYC for a couple weeks in the summer. While there I found something I had not EVER seen in the hinterlands that was my smallish hometown - colored briefs and boxers. Talk about gobsmacked! Where I grew up everything was boxers - usually white but occasionally light blue or with a conservative stripe, or tight white briefs - period. I'm totally serious. There was a catalog called International Male that sold risqué underwear - tiny briefs, thongs, occasional fetishwear in leather, etc. but it was only available mail order and it looked very, very gay.

It was a revelation to see briefs in colors and patterns in Macy's in NYC. I loaded up. When I got home my friends were shocked! I felt like I had started a trend.

Ever since then I've always paid attention to underwear trends. I really liked fitted boxer - briefs, and now compression shorts for looks and comfort. I'm not sure it is really a gay thing except I'm always happy to be in any underwear around a group of guy. I see a lot of str8's also becoming real clothes and underclothes horses for the last twenty years so times have changed. m sure

As to the big question - would being gay / homosexual be the same if all the clothes were baggy? Hmmmmm - it would be different, but we would adapt. Seriously, I'm sure it is my age but I really don't like the way many younger guys wear tight cut suits these days. Jimmy Fallon needs to add an inch or so to his pants and jackets - just seems uncomfortable when he's doing the monologue or playing a physical game with a guest. I think Kimmel's suits fit him well, for his body type too. Generally I don't have any innate draw towards underwear. Wearing underwear for me is just custom, adds comfort and support, and in some cases serves the function of being able to take pants/shorts off without having to be totally nude. Certainly it is very far from having any bearing on my identity. I've fun wearing sexy underwear for a few partners in the past, but it was still only a minute factor in my life.
